behavior and characteristics of these components on MATLAB. [Make a report which must include
basic introduction of the assigned component, its physical and practical characteristics and their
application on software]. Topic assigned is IGBT.
INTRODUCTION:
• Power Electronic:
Power electronics is the branch of electrical engineering that deals with the processing of high
voltages and currents to deliver power that supports a variety of needs. Some examples of uses
for power electronic systems are DC/DC converters used in many mobile devices, such as cell
phones or PDAs, and AC/DC converters in computers and televisions. Large scale power
electronics are used to control hundreds of megawatts of power flow across our nation.
• Fundamental components of Power Electronic:
A switching power converter serves as the main component of a power electronic system.
High-frequency on/off switching of power semiconductor devices makes up the power
converter. In order to deliver controlled power at the output, this operation switches the voltage
and current via the devices. The fundamental components of radio and electronics include
capacitance, inductance, resistance, voltage, electrical current, and voltage. In addition to
current, voltage, resistance, capacitance, and inductance, basic electronics also includes a
number of other fascinating components.
• Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT):
It is a bipolar transistor with an insulated gate terminal. The IGBT combines, in a single
device, a control input with a MOS structure and a bipolar power transistor that acts as an
output switch. IGBTs are suitable for high-voltage, high-current applications. IGBTs are
frequently utilized in inverter circuits (for DC-to-AC conversion) as switching components to
drive small to big motors. To increase their efficiency, IGBTs are employed in industrial
motors, automotive main motor controllers, and residential appliances like air conditioners
and refrigerators. IGBT improves dynamic performance and efficiency and reduced the level
of audible noise.
IGBT Behavioral Model
This example test harness can be used to validate the 'Simplified I-V characteristics and event-
based timing' Modeling option of the Simscape™ Electrical™ N-Channel IGBT. This modeling
option only requires I-V data corresponding to the on-state gate voltage, and models turn-on rise
time and turn-off fall time by making collector-emitter voltage a linear function of simulation time.
Advantages of this approach are faster simulation and easier parameterization.
Both modeling options have been parameterized from the same datasheet. The only event-based
modeling option parameter that requires tuning is the Miller resistance. This is adjusted so that the
current spike matches when turning on a load with pre-existing freewheeling current.

IGBT Characteristics
This example shows generation of the Ic versus Vce curve for an insulated gate bipolar transistor.
Define the vector of gate-emitter voltages and minimum and maximum collector-emitter voltages
by double-clicking the block labeled 'Define Conditions (Vge and Vce)'. Click on the hyperlink
'plot curves' in the model to run the simulations plot the simulation results.
This type of plot can be compared against a manufacturer datasheet to confirm a correct
implementation of the transistor parameters.
