Learning Style

CHARACTERISTIC OF LEARNING
MODALITIES
 Learning skills are habits that can be used
throughout your life to complete the way different
students learn. A style of learning refers to an
individual’s preferred way to absorb, process and
comprehend.
Based on the research that has been on my class, there are
4 types of learning skills that we are adapted.

PLANT SCIENCE LAB 1

We are doing experiments for some syllabus in AGR 122 after we had learnt to use micro-
scope based on the procedure. We must wear a lab coat before entering the lab.
14
1. WEEK 9 & WEEK 10:
MEMORY, IMPROVING CONCENTRATION
AND READING SYSTEM
First and foremost, I’ve learnt a new thing that defined my level of memory to remember back
of what I’ve been concentrated on. I knew that everyone has a different way to memorize
something because it proven that we all didn’t get the same points and concentration.
To relate from the task given by Miss Atikah, we had to total the points that we’ve got
after we answered the questions that will evaluate our types of remembering something.

I scored 5 points which means I still have to do some improvement to boost my mem-
ories skills.

That was the difference between numbers and words that I had memorized when Miss
Atikah gave a few seconds to recognise those numbers and words that had been wrote on the
white board. I remembered the words better than the numbers because words could gave me
some visual that appears on my mind.

To conclude, we need to have some strategies to improve our memories skills in learn-
ing by:

15
1. Understanding Memory Processes.
2. Memory Strategies.
3. Understanding Concentration.
4. Strategies for Improving Concentration.
5. Reading / Study System (SQ3R).

3 TYPES OF MEMORY SYSTEM

 Sensory Memory – If we pay an attention, it will go to the short-term memory. But, if

we do not pay an attention the information will be lost.
 Short-term Memory- It has a limited storage. The information must be rehearsed or
be repeated in order to keep it to the long-term memory, otherwise the information will
be forgotten.
 Long-term Memory- It is unlimited and large storage. The information that comes from
short-term memory are moving to long-term memory and will be stored here for later
use (retrieval).

MEMORY STRATEGIES

HOW TO IMPROVE OUR MEMORY?

1. Masses practice VS Spaced practice

2. Break reading material down for some period of time
3. Rehearsal
4. Elaboration prepare
16
 Acronyms / catchwords – e.g. MAS – Malaysian Airline System ; UiTM – Uni-
versity Teknologi MARA
 Acrostics / catchphrase – e.g. carnivores – animal eaters ; herbivores – plant
eaters ; omnivores – animal and plant eaters ; decomposes – eat decaying
organisms the Catchphrase : “Can Henry Omit Dents”

UNDERSTANDING CONCENTRATION

What is CONCENTRATION?
- Focusing your attention on what you are doing.

Causes of poor concentration:

1. Lack of attention
2. Lack of interest
3. Lack of motivation
4. Distraction from others
5. Uncomfortable environment
6. Physiological matters
7. Psychological matters

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE CONCENTRATION

17
SQ₃R
Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review
1. SURVEY- review the text/material first, looks at title, subtitle, intro, pic-
ture, graphic chart or chapter summary.
2. QUESTION- try to form the question based on your survey.
3. READ- purpose of reading is more to answer questions formed.
4. Recite- summarise and make notes based on answer found for later study-
ing
5. REVIEW- after finished reading the whole text/material, recall the ques-
tion and to answer them properly.

CONCLUSION

To conclude all the topic I’ve been studied for this semester 1 in Study Skills, I
gain a lot of useful information about the several kind of the learning style that
depends on that individual personality. There are a lot of learning method that
could help students more wisely to improve their memory so it will establish
their study performance. Also, I know on how to make myself become more
confident for the way I am like to talk in front of the people or communicate
with them. In this course, I learnt to set a stand on myself better than before
because I have goals to achieve it successfully.

I would like to thank my lecturer, Miss Siti Nurul Atikah that gave me an
opportunity and encouragement to be in her class during this semester. For my
classmates also that always give support to each other.

I hope I will get the good experiences like this on our next semester soon
and I will become more professional doing my work.
