Job Applications and Interviews

Lesson Plan for Grade 9, Personal Development and Career Planning

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

This lesson is focused on the job application process and how to prepare for job interviews. They
will develop an understanding of the different components of a job application, such as resumes
and cover letters, and learn strategies for presenting themselves professionally in interviews.
Through this lesson, students will develop digital citizenship skills as they learn how to navigate
online job application systems and present themselves appropriately in online and in-person
interviews.

MODALITY

Online, Asynchronous

OBJECTIVES

1. Students will be able to identify the key components of a job application, including
resumes and cover letters.
2. Students will be able to describe strategies for presenting themselves professionally in job
interviews.
3. Students will be able to navigate online job application systems and understand the

importance of digital citizenship in the job search process.

MATERIALS NEEDED

1. Computers or tablets
2. Internet access
3. Job search websites (e.g. Indeed, LinkedIn)
4. Sample job applications and interview questions
5. Rubric for evaluating job applications and interview performances

PROCEDURE

1. Introduction Video (10 minutes): Students will watch a introduction video of key
components of a job applicationfor, reflect their prior experiences with job applications
and interviews and share their thoughts and questions on a discussion forum.
2. Online Artifact Exploration (30 minutes): Students will explore online artifacts this
learning module provides which related to job applications and interviews, such as
resume and cover letter templates, sample job applications, and interview preparation
resources. They will take notes on key concepts and best practices.
3. Reflection and wrap-up (20 minutes): Students will reflect on what they have learned in
the exploration and how they can apply these skills and strategies to their future career
goals. They will share their reflections on the discussion forum.

ACTIVITY

1. Introduction to the job application process and the various components of a job
application.
2. Interactive activity on how to prepare for a job interview, including researching the
company, practicing common interview questions, and dressing appropriately.
3. Discussion on the importance of demonstrating digital citizenship in the job application
process, including proper email etiquette, appropriate social media presence, and
avoiding plagiarism in application materials.
