INTRODUCTION
The general working
environment must always be a
safe place to perform tasks,
especially when it requires the
use of ICT. The grade of safety in
the environment will determine
the time that hardware and
equipment will endure, as well as
the success od the tasks
performed.
-ICT is a very useful thing we use
in daily basis. It really makes things
easier but it have lots of down
sides to it.

-Provide information about the common
problems in the general working
environment.
-Provide measures that can help to
prevent accidents during the use of
ICT.

EMPLOYERS
OBLIGATION
EMPLOYERS
OBLIGATIONS

Laws have been passed to ensure

that employers provide a safe
working environment for anyone
who works with computers. This
is called the Health and Safety at
Work Act (1974).
The law states that an
employer must:
Make sure there is
sufficient space for people
Provide tiltable screens to work

Train employees how to use

Provide anti-glare screen
work stations correctly
filters
Ensure employees have
Provide adjustable chairs sufficient breaks
Provide foot supports Pay for regular eye sight
tests for anyone who needs
Make sure lighting is suitable prescription glasses in
order to use the computer.

HEALTH ISSUES
KEY CONCEPTS
Understand the health problems related to the
use of ICT equipment.

Know some strategies to prevent these health

problems.

Be able to describe safety issues related to using

computers and measures for preventing
accidents.
This section looks into some
of these potential hazards and
what you can do to prevent
them.
HEALTH PROBLEM
There are a number of health problems that
you can suffer if you use ICT devices incorrectly or
for too long.

The main ones are:

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

Back and Neck Strain

Eye Strain and Headaches

period of time. For example,

workspace.
Computer users who type and use a
mouse all day long are commonly
affected.
How to prevent
RSI?
Take breaks to rest
your hands.
Use an ergonomic
keyboard/mouse.

How to prevent
Back and Neck ache?
• Take regular breaks to stretch
your body.

• Use adjustable chairs so you

can sit in a p osition suitable
for your height.

• Sit upright against the back

rest.

• Tilt the computer screen so it

is set just below your eye level.

• Keep your feet flat on the

floor.

How to prevent
Eye Strain?

Take regular breaks (every

hour or so).

Use LCD screens rather than

CRT as they have less flicker.

Use an anti-glare screen.

Ensure that room lighting is

good with no direct light
causing glare on the screen.

Keep the screen clean of dirt.

Have eyes tested regularly.

CONCLUSION

The security of the investment in

technological equipment requires an
environment able to provide the proper
measures to protect it from possible
damage. The measures to protect the
equipment also have to seek for the
security of the user and the organization
of data and resources , in order to obtain
the maximum advantage of the ICT.
