Timeline: Bronte – 1820 - 1840

1820- Patrick Bronte, the father of Emily, Charlotte, Anne and Branwell arrived with his wife, Maria
and his children. Haworth – where the Bronte’s lived remained to be their family for the rest of their
lives. Patrick was a published author before he moved to Haworth and his kids grew up around to his
passion for books.

1821 – Elizabeth Branwell took charge of the Parsonage and her children when Mrs’ Bronte died and
had to deal with living in a town with rough ends.

1824- The daughters of Patrick, then went into the world outside of Haworth where they attended
the Clergy Daughters School in which provided some experience for Charlotte, with a model for the
school that went to call the ‘Lowood School’ for her novel, Jane Eyre.

1825 –1831 - Maria dies of tuberculosis, only at 12 years of age. A month later, Elizabeth also died of
the same thing - which is what we know as consumption. Charlotte and Emily return home, following
the devastating news of Elizabeth and Maria dying. Patrick returned home from Leeds and gave a
box of toy soldiers to Bramwell, which is shared out to all his siblings, but given them the dolls was a
sign of showing him the young Branwell, that they remembered. In January 1831, Charlotte
attended Roe Head School - the same school where all the sisters attend after.

1832- 1835 - Charlotte returns home from Roe Head School, where she returns to run the household
and educates her sisters at home. Charlotte becomes a teacher at Roe Head School - which is the
school that she attended in 1831, where in 1835, Emily becomes a student there as well.

1837- 1839 - Emily becomes a teacher at the law Hill School for 6 exhausting months, after she
attends Roe head school. In December 1837, Charlotte resigned her position as governor for the
Sedgwick family, this comes after Charlotte and return home after Ann falling ill. Branwell goes to
Bradford to become a portrait painter, where he used his sisters as portrait models. Emily returns
from Law School after six months. In April 1839, and becomes governor to the Ingham family, a
family which she helps, but is dismissed by them in December, the same year.

1840 – 1845 - in May 1840, and becomes governess to the Robinson family and Bramwell works as
an assistant clerk at the Sowerby Bridge railway station in August, the same year. Their place of
living wasn’t exactly the greatest place to live. Between 1840 and 1845, Anne Bronte started writing
her own novel whilst she was working for the Robinson family, whereas after that, Emily Bronte
started writing her novel ‘Wuthering Heights’ in 1845, which is suggested and then proceeded to
publish the book the following year.
