Louis Danziger, a graphic designer, intended to set up both his
studio and his residence in a neighborhood where many printers
were based. The first sketches drawn by Frank Gehry and Greg
Walsh included both program elements in a single volume,
which they soon redivided into 2 parts. Traffic noise led them
to conceive of opaque boxes closed off from the avenue, with
only a single kitchen window facing it. As the architects put it,
“The dirty, noisy, and totally public nature of the surroundings
necessitated completely introverting and screening the building
from the street. The solution was a fortress-like structure,
recessed from the street, with the residential part sequestered
behind a high wall.”
Los Angeles provided inspiration through its urban landscape.
The concrete mixture banally used for tunnels was employed as
a finish on the same wooden structures as in the monotonous
“dumb boxes” lining the city thoroughfares that Gehry had
emulated the year before in the nearby offices and workshop
designed for Faith Plating Company.
Inside the studio, where a darkroom forms a box within the
box, the walls are finished in plaster while the wooden ceiling
structure, the electrical conduits, and the ventilation system are
all left exposed – as in the SoHo lofts that Gehry was frequenting
in New York City. He also decided to avoid the uniform lighting
conditions that were typical of this sort of program, which would
have resulted from using only north-facing skylights: “I mixed
the light at the back end and through the skylight, so it was not
obtrusive, but it was mixed above eye level.”
This project was the first to be noticed by Gehry’s colleagues
and by artists in Los Angeles, and it also drew the attention of
Reyner Banham, who included it in his legendary 1971 book Los

Located on the border between Germany and the Swiss canton
of Basel, this rather modest building was Frank Gehry’s
European debut and added a spatial, aesthetic inflection to
his work. A fire had destroyed the Vitra factory in 1981, and
Nicholas Grimshaw had designed new hangars to replace it. As
the initial commission for a “small shelter” for a collection of
chairs belonging to the factory’s owner, Rolf Fehlbaum, was not
financially remunerative enough, Gehry was asked to provide an
additional industrial building and a museum. The latter became
a sort of pavilion placed in front of the rectangular volume of
the factory, which serves as a backdrop, with spiral staircases
pinned to it as decoration.
Gehry paid close attention to establishing the correct
relationship between the 2; as he put it, “I was playing with
something that I was interested in, which was the urban quality
that I could create out in that field, the urban quality between
the museum and those entrances.”
The conundrum that Gehry faced was how to achieve the formal
freedom that he had attained through the use of the wooden
frame in California while employing European construction
techniques. At this point, the process of deconstructing volumes
that had given rise to most of Gehry’s projects since the 1970s
came to term. Here they would be integrated into a fluid
continuum, unified visually by their white exterior coating and
