• You must submit documentation of having earned twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing education within the past twenty-
four (24) months.
8. Verification from your original state of licensure
• If the state participates in Nursys, you must complete the Nursys verification process, pay their fee and designate Alabama as the
receipt of the verification.
• If the state does not participate in Nursys, you must contact their state Board directly for further instructions. You will need to send
them the Verification of License form to complete and submit to the Alabama Board of Nursing on your behalf.
9. Submit required documentation if you answered “yes” to any of the regulatory questions (if applicable).
• You must submit a detailed written explanation of the circumstances surrounding the event(s) which you are disclosing on your
application. You must also submit additional supporting documentation.
Renewal License
Renewal of your license occurs every 2 years

Important things to Know About Applying For Licensure for Endorsement

• You cannot have a third party complete the endorsement application on your behalf.
• Temporary permits are for first-time applicants only.
• You cannot apply for a temporary permit if you have answered an affirmative response to one of the regulatory questions.
• You must submit an online application and pay the fee before mailing in any supporting documentation. You do not need to obtain
fingerprints when applying for licensure by endorsement in Alabama.
• You can view the status of your endorsement application here.
• Here’s how you can change your Single State Alabama License into a Multistate License.
• The Board cannot process any application for a multistate license until after they receive the results of the fingerprint background check
from Gemalto.
• The Board has no control over the background check process, which can take several weeks to process, depending on the volume
received by Gemalto.

If you graduated from a pre-licensure nursing program that was not taught with English as the primary language, you must provide
verification of passing one of the following English proficiency examinations with the following minimum scores:
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic examination – overall score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 on all
modules
• Test of English as a Foreign Language, a paper-based test (TOEFL-PBT) – overall score of 560 with a score on the Test of Spoken
English (TSE) of 50
• Test of English as a Foreign Language, computer-based test (TOEFL-CBT) – overall score of 220 with a score on the Test of Spoken
English (TSE) of 50
• Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-based test (TOEFL-iBT) – overall score of 84 with a speaking score of 26
Renewal License
• Registered Nurse renewal schedule: November 30th of even-numbered years.
• Licenses expire regardless of when first issued, except new licenses issued within 90 days of the expiration date. These licenses will
be issued effective through the next biennium.
• If you receive your original license within 12 months of the expiration date, you pay the full license fee and then at your first renewal
you pay a prorated renewal fee (half of the current license fee).
• You must renew your license on or before the expiration date to continue to practice in Alaska.
• There is no grace period to practice on a lapsed license.
Continued competency requirement - must complete 2 of the following methods:
• 30 contact hours
• 60 hours of participation in uncompensated professional activities
• 320 hours of employment as an RN or LPN
*Registered Nurses who receive their original license on or after December 1 of odd-numbered years are not required to provide proof of
continuing competency for their first renewal.
*Licensees are subject to a random mandatory audit of continuing competency. If you are selected for the audit, you will be notified in
writing and given 30 days to submit proof of continuing competency claimed for the concluding licensing period.

• You shall renew your license beginning on February 1 through April 1 on the year the license expires.

• Advanced degree (RN to BSN, MSN, or doctorate; or advanced practice certificate)

1. Have a passing score on the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) or the State Board Test Pool Exam (SBTPE).
2. Have a previous or current license in another state or territory.
3. Have met one of the following practice requirements:
• Practiced as a nurse for 960 hours or more in the past 5 years.
• Have graduated from a nursing program and obtained a degree within the past 5 years.
• Completed an Arizona Board approved refresher course in the past 5 years.
• Obtained an advanced nursing degree in the past 5 years (i.e. LPN to RN, RN to BSN, masters, or doctorate).
4. Hold a Diploma, Associate Degree or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an approved program or LPN applicants hold a Diploma or
Certificate from an approved program.
5. Have Board approval for applicants under investigation.
6. If you were educated in a foreign country, including Canada and Puerto Rico, you must follow the Foreign Educated Requirements for
further requirements.

• In order to receive a temporary license, you must not have a criminal history, a history or disciplinary action by a regulatory agency, a
pending complaint before the Board, or affirmative answers to any criminal background or disciplinary question in the application.
• If you submit an endorsement application online you cannot obtain an emergency walk-through temporary license.
• You must indicate on your application that you want to receive a temporary license.
Fingerprints
• You are required to submit a full set of fingerprints, for the purpose of obtaining a State and Federal criminal record checks.
• You are only exempt from this requirement if you have submitted a fingerprint card to the Arizona State Board of Nursing within the
previous two years.
• A copy of a clearance card issued by DPS is not a substitute.
• Submit your fingerprint card as soon as possible in order to expedite the process.
• A permanent license will not be issued until fingerprint results are received by the Board.
• It can take 6-8 weeks for the Board of Nursing to receive the results from your fingerprints and background check.

• Transcripts are required from all colleges you attended that reflect courses required for a degree in nursing, including general
education course requirements and all nursing courses.
• Transcripts must be reviewed and approved prior to the issuance of a Temporary License.
8. Documents and/or letters explaining prior convictions or disciplinary action and attesting to your rehabilitation (if applicable).
9. For international graduates - send a breakdown of the educational program for international nursing programs form to your school with
the Request for Transcript form. Also, provide the Certified English Translation form to your certified translator if your transcript is not in
English. (See Supplemental Application Instructions for International Graduates.)
Renewal License
• Your first California Registered Nurse license is issued for two birthdays, not two years, and will expire the last day of the month
following your birth date.
• From that date on, it will expire every two years, if renewed timely.
• Renewal of your license is done online through BreEZe

You may work pending your license renewal providing that the renewal fee has been submitted timely and all renewal requirements have
been met.

California License Verification - Endorsement by Another State

California does not participate in Nursys and if you need to verify your CA RN license, please follow the following steps.
Process
1. Fill out the license verification form provided by the state in which you are seeking licensure. If there is no form, write and sign a letter of
request on a blank piece of paper. Be sure either form you use indicates your CA RN license number, your current name, the name you used
when you became licensed in CA and your birth date.
2. Main both the verification form and a check or money order of $100.00 to:

3. Allow 4 weeks for the request to be processed.
• Refer to your bank account as it’s processed the date your check is cashed.

5. If the receiving Board of Nursing indicates that they have not received the verification, wait 30 days (no more than 90 days) before
reaching out to the California Board of Nursing.
6. After the 30 days, they will make another attempt and send a second email.

• The Board must receive and process fingerprint results from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of
Investigation (FBI) as well as review and approve transcripts before a temporary license is issued. There may be a delay if the application
or fingerprint results indicate a prior conviction(s) or another basis for denial.
• Active duty military spouses or partners receive expedited review. The board is required to expedite the licensure process for an
applicant whose spouse or partner is an active duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces and meets other criteria pursuant to Business
and Professions Code section 115.5.

 
Colorado-CO

5. Verification of all other licenses. You will be required to provide information about any other healthcare license you have held in any
other state or country (indicating the license number, status, issuance and expiration date of each).
• If you do not have an active registered nurse license in another state, your license has been expired two years or less, and you have
practiced as a registered nurse within the two year period preceding this application, submit verification from one state in which
your license expiration date was less than two years ago.
• If you do not have an active nurse license in another state, your license has been expired two years or more, and/or you have not
practiced as a registered nurse within the two year period preceding this application, you must demonstrate competency to
practice and may be required to complete an approved refresher course, complete the Competency to Practice forms.
6. Complete the Affidavit of Eligibility
• You will be asked during the online application to attest to and provide information that you are lawfully present in the United
States or otherwise eligible to work here.
• You may be required to upload documentation of your lawful presence.

7. Fingerprint and Complete Background Check
• The results of your background check from CBI are only available to the Office of Licensing for a period of 60 days after your
application is received. Therefore, you should complete the application within one week of submitting your fingerprints to CBI.
• You must submit to a background check specifically for your nursing license. You cannot use a previous background check or a
background check from another state or jurisdiction.
8. Complete a healthcare professional profile
• You will be asked a series of questions concerning your practice at the end of your online application.
9. Provide supporting documents if you answered “yes” to any of the screening questions (if applicable).
10. Provide name change document (if applicable).
11. If you were educated outside the United States and its territories must submit the Credentials Evaluation Service Professional Report
from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) (if applicable).

• All RN licenses expire on September 30th of both odd and even-numbered years depending on when the license is issued.
• If you are issued a license within 120 days of the upcoming renewal expiration date, you will be issued a license with the
subsequent expiration date.

that do not participate in Nursys). In order to be eligible for a temporary license, you must hold an active license in another state that can be
verified through Nursys.
Renewal License
Renewal of your license occurs every year
• You renew online approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date.
• You have a grace period of 90 days following expiration during which time the licensee may continue to practice and renew the
license. On the 91st day, the license becomes void and the licensee must apply for reinstatement.

Delaware-DE

recommends you complete all the required steps and they will decide if a temporary license is needed. Usually, if they are awaiting the
results of your background check one will be issued.

verification of professional activities to meet those goals.

outside of the United States or Canada is equivalent to the RN education required in this Commonwealth at the time the program
was completed.

• You must complete, as a condition of licensure, 3 hours of training approved by the Department of Human Services (DHS) on the
topic of child abuse recognition and reporting.
• After you have completed the required course, the approved provider will electronically submit your name, date of attendance, etc.

You will receive a temporary license while the Wyoming Board of Nursing is awaiting the results from your complete background
check.
Renewal License
• Required contact hours: choose one from the following:
• 50 practice hours within the past 2 years
• 1,600 practice hours within the past 5 years
• 20 continuing education units in the past 2 years
• Refresher or reentry program in the past 5 years
Foreign Educated Applicants

• Foreign educated applicants must submit a Foreign Educated Application and meet the following criteria:

• Graduate from an international education program (approved by the authorized accrediting body in the applicable country and
verified by an independent credential review agency). See Accepted Credentialing Agencies below.
• Successfully complete the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX –RN exam.
• Provide verification of nursing licensure status and/or authorization to practice, if applicable, from country of origin.
• Successfully pass an English proficiency exam that includes the components of reading, speaking, writing and listening (except
for applicants from countries where English is the native language and the nursing program was taught in English and used
English textbooks).
• Provide a copy of your social security card AND another form of lawful presence (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, or
other items listed on the application.)
• Graduated from a foreign pre-licensure nursing education program within 5 years from date of application.
• Accepted transcript credentialing agencies:
• CGFNS course-by-course evaluation (Commission for Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools); or
• CGFNS certificate program (CES); or
• ERES (Education Records Evaluation Service); or
• IERF (International Education Research Foundation, Inc); or
• Josef Silny & Associates, Inc.
• If you are a foreign educated nurse and are currently licensed in the US, you will submit an Endorsement Application instead of
the Foreign Educated Application.

• Your application for Licensure by Endorsement will expire after one (1) year.
• Issuance of your permanent license is dependent upon receipt of your Complete Background Check results from DCI.
• If you have answered “yes” to any of the eligibility questions, your application may be referred to the Application Review Committee.
