Water reuse
Water is our element. We protect groundwater, we treat wastewater, we regulate flowing
waters and we develop watercourses in a natural way. For more than 100 years, LINEG
has guaranteed water management from a single source in its association area on the
left bank of the lower Rhine. The administrative headquarters of our public company,
which employs around 320 people, is in Kamp-Lintfort. Other locations include the
laboratory and a workshop in Moers as well as five wastewater treatment plants.

Sustainability management using the example of the municipal
vehicle sector VKU Solutions Tour: Heavy rain & flood prevention
In socio-political terms, the topic of sustainability has been discussed VKU Solutions Tour: Heavy rain & flood prevention
internationally since 1970. The agenda of measures and legal requirements
has risen continuously, as has general environmental awareness. However, the VKU e.V.
hoped-for expectation of radical change has not been fulfilled so far, as resource
consumption continues to rise. Graphs such as Earth Overshoot Day show on
which day the resource consumption per country is reached. This leads to the
fact that we would need 1.7 earths of resources worldwide today. If all people
lived the way they do in Germany, we would need 2.9 Earths of resources.This is
why sustainability management is playing an increasingly important role for
companies.

Water reuse
In order to avoid getting into serious conflicts over the use of water resources
during prolonged periods of drought, the reuse of treated wastewater is also an
option. Different users demand different requirements for the treated wastewater,
and hygiene aspects play an essential role. The EU regulation on minimum
requirements for water reuse will be applied in all member states in June 2023.

The water-conscious city—solutions from practice
As a result of the advancing climate crisis, extreme weather events such as heavy
rain, heat and dry periods continue to increase. Densely built-up urban areas are
particularly affected. Climate-adapted planning and building according to the
“sponge city” principle is becoming increasingly important. The goal must be to no
longer divert precipitation, but to keep it in the city and to strengthen blue and
green infrastructures. As part of the tour, the DBU will present exemplary solutions
for the water-conscious city of the future together with project partners, Berliner
Wasserbetriebe and German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste.
