ETHNIC GROUPS IN NEGROS

Ethnic Group Description Picture

The Cebuano people (Cebuano: Mga

Sugbuanon) are the largest subgroup of
the larger ethnolinguistic group
Visayans, who constitute the largest
Filipino ethnolinguistic group in the
country. Their primary language is the
Cebuano language, an Austronesian
Cebuano
language. They originated in the
People
province of Cebu in the region of
Central Visayas, but then later spread
out to other places in the Philippines,
such as Siquijor, Bohol, Negros
Oriental, southwestern Leyte, Western
Samar, Masbate, and large parts of
Mindanao.
The Hiligaynon people (mga
Hiligaynon), often referred to as
Ilonggo people (mga Ilonggo) or
Panayan people (mga Panayanon), are
a Visayan ethnic group whose primary
language is Hiligaynon, an
Austronesian language of the Visayan
branch native to Panay, Guimaras, and
Hiligaynon
Negros. Over the years, inter-
People
migrations and intra-migrations have
contributed to the diaspora of the
Hiligaynon to different parts of the
Philippines. Today, the Hiligaynon
form the majority in the provinces of
Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Guimaras,
Capiz, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat,
and North Cotabato.
The Karay-a is a Visayan ethnic group
native to the islands of Panay and
Karay-a
Palawan in the Philippines. They speak
People
the Karay-a language (Kinaray-a:
Kinaray-a).

The Ati are a Negrito ethnic group in

the Visayas, the central portion of the
Ati Philippine archipelago. Their small
People numbers are principally concentrated in
the islands of Boracay, Panay and
Negros.
