ACTIVITY No. 2
Water and Its Properties
Objectives:
1. To identify and explain the various properties of water.
2. To comprehend the phenomena associated with the properties of water.
Introduction:pp0.
Water is needed everywhere. It is essential every day. From the moment of waking up and
taking a bath to cooking breakfast and taking the first cup of morning coffee; to brushing teeth and
washing dishes and other things, not to mention drinking. Water is also essential to maintain food
supply and support organisms, however, as the population of humans and animals increase, the
likelihood of water pollution also increases. Therefore, clean water supply is endangered in the
process (Kiliç, 2020).
Water is tasteless, colorless and odorless. It is dubbed as a universal solvent as it dissolves
more solute more than any other liquids in the world. However, water is much more than that, it
has much properties that are rarely seen in other compounds (Kontogeorgis et al., 2022).
The properties of pure water are laid out in this experiment. This is the first of two parts on
the properties of water and some of the purification operations that can be performed on it. The
following section, Activity 3, will involve water purification methods.
Apparatus and Materials:
4 250mL beaker Salt
2 100mL Graduated Cylinder Sugar
2 Stirring rods Food Coloring
1 Thermometer Disposable Teaspoon
1 Wire Gauze 1 Timer
1 Bunsen burner 1 Fe ring

Procedures:
Water as a Universal Solvent
1. Pour 100 mL of water into a beaker.
2. Add a teaspoon of salt.
3. Stir well until the salt is completely dissolved.
4. Record the time in which the solute has dissolved.
5. Repeat steps 1–4 twice more. Keep a record of the data on the data table provided
below.
6. Follow steps 1–4, but instead of salt, use sugar.
7. Examine and record the physical appearance of both solids before and after dissolution.

Water and its Changes in Density

1. Pour 100mL into a beaker and dissolve 3 teaspoons of sugar.
2. Mix in a small amount of food coloring until well mixed
3. Pour 15mL of the solution in steps 1 & 2 to a graduated cylinder.
4. In another beaker, repeat procedures 1 and 2 but instead of 3 teaspoons, add 2
teaspoons.
5. SLOWLY pour 15mL of the contents of the second beaker to the graduated cylinder.
SLOWLY ADD the solution that it does not disturb the solution inside the cylinder.
6. Do procedures 1 to 4 but using 1 teaspoon instead of 2 teaspoons.
7. If the sugar does not dissolve, heat the mixture. Make sure to take it out of the heat
before stirring.
8. Slowly add water into the beaker on top of the 3 solutions. Do this slowly to avoid
disruption.
9. You may choose the order of the colors that you want.
10. Take note of the observations.
Water and Changes in Solubility
1. Pour 50mL of tap water into a beaker.
2. Dissolve 2 teaspoons of salt in the beaker.

3. Record the time it takes for all of the salt to dissolve.

4. Repeat procedures 1 and 2 once more.
5. Heat water to 50 degrees Celsius.
6. Repeat procedures 1 to 4 but instead of using tap water, use the hot water
Water Hardness
1. Pour 100 mL of water into a beaker and record the temperature.
2. Bring the water to a boil using a Bunsen burner.
3. Measure the temperature of the water as it boils. Boil for 3-5 minutes.
4. Take note of the appearance of the water before and after it has been boiled.
5. After observing the water, immediately wash the beaker.

Questions for Critical Thinking

1. Which solute dissolved faster in Activity 1? Why do you think is this so?

2. Which property of water does activity portray? Explain this property.
