OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson you will be able to;


• Define body mass index and heart rate
• Measure body mass index and heart rate; and
• Value the importance of measuring the BMI and
Heart rate
What is Body Mass Index?
• Body mass index or BMI is the measure
of a person’s body composition based on
his/her body weight in relation to his/her
height. BMI is a good indicator of amount
of fat in the body.
• Body mass index or BMI test requires
you to measure your weight and height
first. The BMI formula is the same for
children and adult. However, it differs
slightly depending on the system of
measurement to be used, English or
metric.
When you do physical activity, your body response
to its increased energy needs. This reaction can be
observed in three noticeable ways:
1. You start to sweat
2. You experience shortness of breath
3. Your heart beats faster
Heart Rate
• Your heart rate, also known as pulse rate, is the
number of times your heart beats in a minute.
Heart rate may be used to find out your health and
fitness level.
STAGES
1. Resting Heart Rate (RHR) is your pulse rate while
at rest. Your RHR should be taken before start doing
any physical activity. The normal rate for children
from 10 years of age is 60-100 beats per minutes

2. Target or Training Heart Rate (THR) is your pulse
rate during a physical activity. Your THR depends on
the type of activity you are doing. Knowing your
THR helps you determine if the specific exercise or
activity is working for you or overworking .

mesomorph, and ectomorph);
• Differentiate the body types from each other;
• Define underweight, overweight and obese; and
• Value the importance of maintaining a good body
figure.
