CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Adolescent Pregnancy is a widespread occurrence with well-established causes and

negative effects on a person's health, society, and economy. The adolescent birth rate

(ABR) has declined globally, albeit at varying rates in different geographic areas.

Significant differences in levels exist both between and within nations. Pregnancy among

teenagers is more common among people with less education or lower socioeconomic

level. Also, among these and other vulnerable populations, there is slower success in

lowering adolescent first births, which results in growing inequality.

Girls have a higher risk of becoming pregnant, often unintentionally, as a result of

child marriage and child sexual abuse. Adolescents are frequently unable to use or access

contraceptives, which makes it difficult for them to avoid unintended pregnancy.

Access to high-quality maternal care for adolescents who are pregnant and parenting

is gaining more and more attention. WHO collaborates with partners to promote

awareness of adolescent pregnancy, create an evidence base for action, develop tools to

support policies and programs, build capacity, and assist nations in effectively addressing

adolescent pregnancy.

6
In the Philippines, the high rate of pregnancy is one of the top problems. We can't find

any solution or an antidote to solve these problems. Young kids are also involved a lot in

this problem. Many of those kids are not yet ready to face it so they can’t handle the

situation very well and that will result in having another problem from one another.

Every year, an estimated 21 million girls aged 15–19 years in developing regions become

pregnant so because of their young age the pregnancy is really hard to handle or to settle.

Family background is one of the main risk factors of teenage pregnancy. Several

studies have noted that living with both parents reduced the risk of teenage pregnancy.

Some concluded that teenage pregnancy was more likely to occur in adolescent women

raised in a single-parent family than in a two-parent family. Others reported that living

with neither parent may lead to a high likelihood of teenage pregnancy.

In this research entitled Student involved in Adolescent Pregnancy during Pandemic in

Barangay Gen. T. De Leon In Valenzuela City, we the researcher will study the involvements

of a teenager or an age that experience adolescence into a pregnancy situation, why the

percentage of pregnancy are continuously increasing and how to decrease it or to solve this

kind of problem. Also we will consider the respondents and their privilege to be involved in

this kind of research.

7
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand how mothers who are enrolled in school manage their

circumstances in relation to both raising children and their education. What difficulties,

precisely, have they had in balancing their studies with caring for their children at home?

The study also aims to identify the coping mechanisms employed by student mothers in these

situations. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the Student’s characteristics in term of:

1.1. Age

1.2 . Age when pregnant

1.3. Status

1.4. School Attended

2. What are the causes of teenage pregnancy among the students and out-of-school

youth in Barangay Gen. T. De Leon?

3. What are the factors contribute to early teenage pregnancy

3.1 Lack of education and information about reproductive sexual health including

lack of access to tools that prevent pregnancies

3.2 Different factors towards teenage pregnancy

3.3. Abortion

8
4. How can teenage pregnancy be stopped or minimized

Null Hypothesis

The following null- hypotheses were formulated to guide the study:

1. There is no significant difference in the educational development of teenage

pregnancy when grouped according to age, educational attainment, status, and

type of school attended.

2. The causes of teenage pregnancy have no significant effect on the educational

development of students and out-of-school youth in Gen. T. De Leon, Valenzuela

City.

Significance of the Study

This significant study finds out the effect of the major causes of teenage pregnancy on the

students. The result of this study is beneficial to all students, teachers, parents, school admin,

and the other interested. This can serve as empirical data where suggestions of minimizing

teenage pregnancy in the community can be taken.

9
The Students, who still are at school because it will give them information about the

cause and possible effects of teenage pregnancy to their studies once they get pregnant. In

one way or another, this paper will guide them to focus first their attention on their studies

rather than giving priority to their romantic affairs with boyfriends.

The Parents, to help them understand the important role they play in safeguarding,

educating, and discouraging their teenagers from engaging in early sex, especially if they are

not married. They must be mindful too of what kind of peers their teenagers have. This study

too will make the parents aware that education about the use of contraceptives will start also

at home.

The School Administrators would receive information on the significance of

understanding the primary causes of early pregnancy and any potential effects on adolescent

academic development. It's one way that administrators can step up sex education in their

institution and enhance faculty or teachers' knowledge through seminars so that they can

effectively interact with students and prevent early pregnancy. If it is not halfway to the

learners for it to be understood and effective, cut it off. In conducting this study, I hoped that

the findings would also be of great assistance to future researchers and to everyone who is

curious to learn more about teen pregnancy.

The Out-of-School youth to be aware of not getting pregnant. In order to maximize their

chances of returning to school or enrolling in ALS (Alternative Learning System),

unschooled youth should be aware to avoid getting pregnant while still in their teens.

10
Scope and Delimitation

The study was mainly focused on the student's mother challenges, coping strategies

and realizations. These student mothers were classified as students that have a child under

five (5) years of age.

The researchers considered working on this study to find out if there’s an effect to other

students and to their community where they lived.
