1 INTRODUCTION
1 Introduction
We are pleased to introduce the latest release of StationWare, which offers a number of enhancements
and new features.
The new release comes with a new document object, which provides additional document management
functionalities. The data table actions have been further extended and additional user group rights have
been implemented. The use of scripts and reports has been simplified and extended by the possibility
to use a range of objects as input parameters.
In this version of StationWare, the access to additional StationWare documentation has been facili-
tated by making it available directly via the user interface. Built-in example Python scripts and new
service methods help users to automate their own processes in their StationWare application. New and
improved converters for the import and export of protection settings are available.
We wish you success with StationWare 2022 and we look forward to your comments and feedback.

2 User Interface
The enhancements in the user interface relate to the new document object, additional data table
functionalities, selected objects as input parameters for scripts and reports and additional user group
rights. These all enhance the usability of StationWare, with the data being more readily accessible to
the user.
In StationWare 2022, a document object is introduced. This new object is a further development of the
existing possibility to manage any electronic documentation, such as substation single line diagrams or
test reports. In the past, documents were managed as attachments. Now, the document object is an
additional primary StationWare object type, similar to devices and processes. This makes it easier for
users to manage their documents. A document has its own details page, which enables it to be locked
while it is being edited. If a document is locked, no-one else can modify the document details. This
prevents conflicts between two or more users trying to modify the same document at the same time.
The actions that can be executed on documents are still available. They can be accessed from the
document details page, as with other StationWare objects.
The document versions are now displayed in the tab “Versions”, similar to devices and settings or
processes and tasks. Additional tabs such as “Notes”, “Links” and “Audit Trail” are provided on the
details page.
Documents can now be assigned owners. The owner is the user who is responsible for the document.
Users can see all their own documents on the “My Documents” tab of the “My StationWare” page. The
classification of selectable owners in relevant and other users is the same as for other StationWare
objects. Relevant users have “Write” access on the documents. The other users are allowed to read
the documents. Document access rights depend on the document category rights and the user group
“Data Access Rights”. The introduction of a document owner is the first step to the future functionality
of document management according to lifecycles defined for document categories.

The advanced search now supports the search for documents by category in the hierarchy. The
document category and filter attributes are selectable from a list; wildcards can be used. The search
result columns are definable by the user. The enhanced advanced search includes the extension of the
table views to allow the user to define his or her own document views, including specific filter criteria.
Filters of any complexity can be easily defined via the user-friendly standard search functionality. The
document table views provide the user an overview of all documents located in locations, sublocations
and/or devices in one tab.

Additional attribute containers and attributes can now be defined and assigned to the base document
type, to apply to all documents or to specific document categories. Document-specific additional
attributes provide the possibility to represent additional information that users may find useful for a
document. A typical example can be the status of a document.
In StationWare 2022, the table facilities have been further expanded. Extended filter options, a selection
mechanism, a toggle assign action, multi-selection as input parameter and the settings view creation
from a selection are implemented to improve the usability of the tables.
Tables now support a greater variety of filters. The following filter options have been introduced:
Figure 2.5: Example for the new Filter Options for Tables based on the shown Operators
It is now possible to select/unselect table entries using the adjacent checkboxes. Parameters can be
multi-selected by holding down the shift/control key while selecting the parameters (standard Windows
functionality). The checkbox above the column allows a global select/unselect of all entries in a table.
Setting or task parameters have an “Assigned” property that indicates if the setting/task parameters are
included in the corresponding setting/task. Setting/task parameters can be assigned/unassigned with a
toggle action, by clicking on the icon, as long as the setting/task is in edit mode. Please note that
the assignment of parameters only works as long as there is still a valid value cached for the parameter
(same editing session).
The action to compare two settings or tasks can now be executed directly in the table. The user can
select the corresponding settings/tasks and starts the comaprison by clicking on the icon in the table.
The functionality to select/unselect table entries allows the selection to be used as an input parameter
for further actions. Multi-selected objects can be passed as input parameters to reports and scripts.
In addition, the multi-selection of table entries can be used as a preparation step for the defintion of
settings views. The following actions are available for editing settings views via an existing setting.
• Create Settings View - Creates a new settings view with the settings selected in the table.
• Add to Settings View - Adds selected settings to a settings view that is valid for the current setting.
• Remove from Settings View - Removes selected settings from the currently displayed settings
view.
Please note that the actions are only shown when the administrative device type right is granted.
The new StationWare release provides additional access rights for user groups. Now it is possible to
assign user group rights on additional attribute container and table views.
Access rights can be configured for additional attribute containers to control access for the individual
user groups. User groups can have “None”, “Read” or “Write” access on additional attributes.
User groups can now have access or no-access rights for table views. If access is not granted, the user
group will not be able to see that specific table view.
The new StationWare release provides direct access to additional documentation, namely Release
Notes, What’s New and converter manuals, to make them more easily available to the user.
The StationWare “Help” menu has been extended. In addition to the User Manual and the link to the
Support Centre, the Release Notes and What’s New document for the current StationWare release can
now also be found in the “Help” menu in the top-right corner of the StationWare application.
It is possible now to access the converter manuals directly from StationWare, in one the following ways:
• The link on the converter name provided in the “Converter ID” list on the device type details page.
• The link in the “Manual” column in the “Converter” tab under “Technical Information”.
• The question mark next to the converter in the settings import/export dialog.
Please note that the first two options are only available for users who have the corresponding adminis-
trative rights.
StationWare 2022 comes with some built-in example scripts that can be used as a starting point by users
wishing to develop their own Python scripts to automate processes in StationWare. One example is the
transition script “Create Task”, that can be used to create a new task once an existing task changes its
phase via a specific transition. Another built-in example script searches for all settings and tasks within
the hierarchy whose expiry date has passed and sends an email to the respective owner.
The example scripts are grouped under “Examples” categories in the “Administration -> Python Scripts”
menu.
3 Interfaces
This StationWare release offers additional web service methods, for example to compare processes,
settings and tasks, to improve the access possibilities on components of the StationWare system for
third party tools or to automate tasks using external software.
3.2 Converters
A new converter and an enhanced converter are available for the import/export of protection device
settings via manufacturer-specific settings files. Files from the following manufacturer software products
are now supported:
DIgSILENT GmbH
Heinrich-Hertz-Straße 9
