How to use these flashcards
Flashcards are a great way to learn and revise information.

Learners
1) Print your flashcards onto white card.

2) Copy the phonetic symbol from the front of the card to the back of the card.

3) Write an (English) word with this sound at the beginning of the word. (See the
next page for ideas.)

4) If you speak another language and have this sound in your language, write a
word from your language that has this sound in the beginning of the word (or
the middle or end). If the sound is not in your language highlight the sound
with a marker, or another way of your choice, to remind you to be extra careful
with this sound ;-)

5) Hold all the cards with the front facing you. Look at the first card on the top.
Do you know this sound? If yes, put the card down beside you. If no, you can
check the sound on this soundboard:
https://www.pronunciation.club/phonetic-soundboard
Then put this card at the bottom of all the cards to redo later.

6) Continue until you know all the sounds.

7) Revise all the cards each day, then once a week, then once a month to help you
to remember all the sounds.

Teachers
Print the cards then use them for teaching and class flashcard games.

Common English Pronunciation
These are the most common sounds for English pronunciation. All the sounds are voiced (you use your
vocal chords to say the sound) except for nine unvoiced/voiceless sounds (only air comes out) in the
the purple or light shaded boxes below. All unvoiced sounds have a matching voiced sound except for /h/.
