CE 6121: Advanced Structural Steel Design

Course Teacher: Prof. Dr. K.M. Amanat

Term: April 2020

Assignment-1
Answers to all questions/problems must be accompanied by relevant
drawings/illustrations/figures/sketches etc. for easier understanding.

For solving the problems, use design formulas and avoid using charts from manual.
1. For the box section (Fy=36 ksi, Young’s modulus = 29000 ksi) having residual
stress distribution as shown in the following figure subjected to axial
compression,
(a) Derive algebraic expressions of average stress vs average strain as well as
expressions for average tangent modulus in terms of average strain.
(b) Derive algebraic expressions of moment of inertia about both strong and
weak axes in terms of average strain.
(c) Draw column curve for the section (Fcr vs L/r) taking into account the
presence of residual stress considering the variation of tangent modulus as
well as the variation of moment of inertia (Ix and Iy). For comparison also
draw the Euler's column curve.

2. Design a laced column consisting of four angles to carry 125 kips dead load
and 500 kips live load axial compression, with an effective length KL of 30 ft.
Assume all connections will be welded and use A572 Grade 50 steel. Design
the column chord members, lacing, plates at end and also check the shear
effect.
3. Redesign the laced column of Prob.2 above except that the overall dimension
of the column shall be limited to 20 inch.

Last date of submission: 3rd March, 2021.
