BMS533 PRAC# 7 : Laboratory Inspection

Objective

To conduct a self-inspection of a BSL-1 Laboratory

Outcomes

I. Know - the requirements for a BSL-1 lab

II. Know - how to improve the safety in a BSL-1 lab
III. Do - self-inspect a BSL-1 lab
IV. Feel - confident in using a checklist for self -inspection

Exercise

1. Using the checklist attached, conduct a self -inspection of the laboratory that you use
for this course.
2. Based on the outcomes, complete the report.

Report

1. List two areas that will require immediate attention to improve the safety performance of this
Lab.

Area that needs immediate attention What needs to be done

1 There are no instructions or procedures for The procedure and instruction for using
using machinery apparatus such as an machinery apparatus such as an autoclave
autoclave. should be displayed on the machines.
2 Biohazard warning signage is not present at More biohazard signage, such as corrosive,
all access points, such as autoclaves and explosive, and flammable signs, should be
laminar flow. displayed both inside and outside the
laboratory, as well as on machinery.

Example: There is no signage on the door. Signage with the necessary information was
installed.

2. If you are asked to upgrade this Lab to BSL-2, what will be the three most important areas to
upgrade?

Area to upgrade What action to take

1 Biological safety cabinet The centrifugation processes need to be

performed in a biosafety cabinet with an
aerosol-tight top, and the rotors should be
loaded and unloaded inside the cabinet.

2 Safety equipment such as sink, eyewash The station should be readily available and
station, safety shower, fire blanket, and the instructions on how to use each of the
extinguisher equipment should be displayed, so people
could use it easily during an emergency.

3 Autoclave In order to dispose of some types of

biohazardous waste in an appropriate way,
make sure to use either an autoclave or
another means of decontamination.

Example: No signage at door Attached signage with required information
