NOVEL REVIEW
TITLE: A Thousand Splendid Suns
AUTHER: Khaled Hosseini
FIRST PUBLICATION: 2007
A Thousand Splendid Suns takes us decades back to
Afghanistan war of soviets and the Taliban. The story revolves
around two main characters Laila and Mariam. These are
fictional characters, but the story and the points raised by the
writer are true. He tries to explain how the women were
treated and the oppression done on them. The disaster and
sufferings of people during war are explained in detail. The
story starts with Mariam, a 15-year-old girl who is insecure and
does not have the courage and confidence to take any stand for
her. She got married at a young age and went to Kabul with her
husband. Then she came to know Laila, her neighbor who is an
opposite personality to her. She was confident believes in
freedom of women and goes to school for education. Then the
war brought them together and they became friends.
This novel is very heart touching and completely connects with
your emotion and ultimately makes you cry. Even though you
know nothing about Afghanistan and the war you will
completely understand about the conditions and outcomes of
the war. I felt great after reading it for me it is the best novel I
have ever read, and I would recommend others to read it.
