III. PROCEDURE:

Preliminaries

 Prayer
 Attendance Check
 Health Protocols

ACTIVITY A. Pre-Activity
Review

 What are the characteristics of matter?

 What are the properties of matter?
 What are the three states of matter?

Motivation

Use an interactive educational tool/apps to introduce the particle nature of matter (e.g. PhET interactive simulations,
Chemix, Atom smith, or similar resources).

Ask the learners to respond to the following guide questions:

a) What are the things that you have observed in the simulation?
b) How can you explain the behavior of the particles in the simulation?
c) What do you think is the importance of understanding the particle nature of matter in explaining natural
phenomena?

Activity:
Presentation:

 Read the objectives for the day.

 Present the topic by giving an overview of the historical development of the concept of the atom and its
significance in explaining properties and changes in matter. B. Activity Proper: Changes of State in the Water
Cycle Objectives:
 Explain how water behaves in its different states within the water cycle.
 Apply the concept of the particle nature of matter in explaining changes of state in water. Materials:
 Handouts on the water cycle, changes of state in water, and the properties of matter.
 Multimedia tools (if available) for presenting the water cycle and changes of state in water (e.g. videos,
animations, simulations) Procedure:
 Divide the class into groups and provide them with handouts on the water cycle and changes of state in water.

Using multimedia tools (if available), present the water cycle and emphasize the changes of state of water that occur
during the process.

 Ask the learners to discuss in their groups the following guide questions: a. What are the different states of
water? b. What are the changes of state that occur in water during the water cycle? c. How can we explain the
changes of state in water using the concept of the particle nature of matter?
 Ask each group to present their answers and facilitate a class discussion to summarize the key points. C. Post-
Activity
 Publication/Presentation of Group Report/Output
 Ask each group to prepare a summary of their discussion and present it to the class using multimedia tools (if
available) or through a written report. 2. Process the group report
 Facilitate a discussion on the group reports and ask the learners to compare and contrast their explanations of
the changes of state in water based on the particle nature of matter.
 Encourage the learners to ask questions and clarify their understanding of the topic.

Discussion of the Topic

Use the handouts on the properties of matter to discuss how the particle nature of matter explains the characteristics of
solids, liquids, and gases.

Emphasize the role of intermolecular forces in determining the properties of matter.

Facilitate a class discussion on how the understanding of the particle nature of matter can be applied in other contexts.

ANALYSIS
 How does the particle nature of matter explain the characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases?
 What are the intermolecular forces that determine the properties of matter?
 How can we apply the concept of the particle nature of matter in explaining other natural phenomena?

ABSTRACTION (3 guide questions)

Why is it important to understand the particle nature of matter in explaining natural phenomena?

What are the limitations of using the concept of the atom to explain natural phenomena?

How can we use the particle nature of matter to design new materials?

APPLICATION

 How can we apply our understanding of the particle nature of matter in designing new materials?
 How can we apply our understanding of the particle nature of matter in environmental science?
 How can we apply our understanding of the particle nature of matter in medicine?

IV. EVALUATION:

1. Which of the following is the smallest particle of an element that has all the properties of the element?
a. Atom b. Molecule c. Compound d. Ion
2. What is the measure of the space occupied by an object?

VI. REMARKS:

(Continue the Lesson)

In this lesson, the learners were able to understand the particle nature of matter as a basis for explaining properties,
physical changes, and structure of substances and mixtures. They were able to explain the properties of solids, liquids,
and gases based on the particle nature of matter, and present how water behaves in its different states within the water
cycle. The learners also analyzed, abstracted, and applied their understanding of the particle nature of matter in various
contexts. The evaluation was in the form of multiple-choice questions, and the assignment was focused on research,
observation, and investigation. Overall, the learners were able to appreciate the role of scientific inquiry in
understanding natural phenomena.
