Lesson 2 – Paths united

Select multiple shapes/paths


These instructions will guide you through selecting multiple shapes/paths in Inkscape.

The latest version of Inkscape was used at the time of creating this resource (Inkscape 0.92). Note that
there may be differences between versions.

Task Select multiple shapes/paths


Steps Instructions

1. Open a new or existing file .svg Use the menu File ▷ Open (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl ⊕
file. O).

or

Use the menu File ▷ New (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl ⊕ N).

2. Create two new shapes/paths. See Lesson 1.

3. Select two or more shapes/paths. Here are some ways to select two or more shapes/paths.
Method 1:
This method will select all shapes/paths on the canvas.
Click on the Select all objects or all nodes button in the
top left of the screen (directly below the file menu).

A dashed outline will appear around each individual


shape/path with double-ended arrows surrounding the
group.

Method 2:
Select the selection tool from the tool bar on the left side
of the screen (the black arrow icon).

Click and drag a rectangle that surrounds all of the


shapes/paths you wish to select.

Method 3
Select the selection tool from the tool bar on the left side
of the screen (the black arrow icon).

Click on an individual shape/path to select it.

Hold down the Shift key and right click a different


shape/path to select another.

A dashed outline will appear around each individual


shape/path with double-ended arrows surrounding the
group.

Tip:
To deselect a selected shape/path hold down the Shift key
and right click on the shape/path you wish to deselect.
