CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION

Social media started when people started to communicate. "Social" means human society, as an

interference of people and groups, and "media" is the medium of expression. Most of the forms

of social media are not digital. It generates a large number of innovations, and social media is one

of the biggest inventions of technology, which is now the most popular and widely used. We

define social media as "technologies that make social communication easy and enable discussions

among its participants". In our study, the word "social media" means a web-based mobile

application that allows people or companies to make, interact with, and share new user-generated

or current material in a digital environment. Students are consumers and producers of social

media.
Thanks to the internet and social web, including Facebook, YouTube, blogs, Instagram, etc., most

students increasingly live in a world where information is accessible through communication

technologies. In 2010, as reports show more teenagers, about 73% of them use social media sites

and 75% have cellphones. Students do not always have the media literacy skills necessary to

effectively analyze, comprehend, and evaluate new forms of information and make sound

decisions about their quality and applications. The use of social media has become

comprehensive and, currently, the most popular social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram, and YouTube.

The use of social media sites has exploded and evolved into an online platform where people

create content, share it, bookmark it, and network at a prodigious rate. Because of its ease of use,

speed, and reach, social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and setting trends

and agendas on topics that range from the environment and politics to technology and the

entertainment industry. In the last ten years, the online world has changed dramatically. Thanks

to the invention of social media, young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal

information, pictures, and videos at a truly astonishing rate. The increased use of social

networking websites has become a social way of life for people from all over the world.

Teenagers and young adults have especially embraced these sites as a way to connect with their

peers around the globe, share information, reinvent their personalities, and showcase their social

lives. With these developments in technology, social networking sites have become more and

more popular among students, and a major concern has arisen over how the use of social sites

among undergraduate students affects their academic performance.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media usage by students is so rampant recently because of easy access to devices such as

smart phones, I phones, Blackberry, tablets, I pads, and laptops which are connected to the

internet. Addiction to social media usage has skyrocketed in recent years. The dangers of its
effects on the academic performance of over-involved students are concerning. Academic

performance, which is depicted by the grades of students, is a great concern. Students that spend

excessive time on social networks become dependent on them and it is believed that their

academic performance diminishes proportionately. It is perceived that school grades will suffer

when spending too much time on social networking sites. Different researchers have conducted

research to ascertain the influence of social media on users. According to the results, the more

students use social media, the more it affects their academic performance

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1.) What are the types of social media that the students are engaged in?

2.) How much time do students spend using social media?

3.) Does using of social media have any positive impact on students academic performance?

4.) Does using of social media have any negative impact on students academic performance?

5.) Is there any difference between the academic performance of students who use social media and

those who do not?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

In this study, it is often easier and more convenient to access information, provide information,

and communicate via social media. Tutors and students can be connected to each other and can

make good use of these platforms for the benefit of their learning and teaching. In return,

students' achievements become the reason to be aware of the situation in school.

SCHOOL

In this study, we learn new digital literacy skills, improve knowledge retention and

understanding, increase class participation and motivate students, build community and connect

students to each other and the global community. Become an effective member of an online

community, improve student writing, learn a different style of writing, go beyond text, images,
video, and design. Take classroom knowledge public and let students show their personality.

improves students' attitudes towards the course content, digital citizenship, and global

competency and Internationalizing learning in a global classroom where instructors and students

teach and learn with peers abroad using internet-based technologies for communication.

TEACHERS

The researchers also showed that through social media, teachers can enhance interactions

between students and teachers and with people and resources outside the classroom.

PARENT

In this study, nearly 60% of parents said they use online platforms to find parenting information

and advice. 82% indicated social media helps stay connected with grandparents, and 24% noted

they use it to seek emotional support for parenting issues. However, excessive use of social media

has also been shown to have effects on parenting, causing parental distraction, decreasing the

level of everyday parental engagement and making a child more likely to be at risk for injury.

STUDENTS

Through data and information gathering, social media can help students improve their academic

performance and knowledge. Whenever students are given assignments, they go through various

online platforms to collect information to make their assignments.

RESEARCHERS

In this following research in the literature, we have identified several advantages of social media.

These include information exchange and communication; teamwork and working from home;

data sharing; sharing hardware and peripherals; service and education.

SCOPE AND DELIMINATION OF THE STUDY

The study was conducted to assess the impact of social media on students' academic

performance. More students who are actively using social media are the respondents of the study.

It was conducted during the pandemic of academic year 2020–2022. In the study, the researchers

assumed that it has effects on respondents' access to the internet, perception of social media, and

frequency of using it.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The primary of this research endeavor was to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of

using social media in academic performance of senior high school students at Lian Institute and

ascertain to which it might help to the educational performance

LOCAL LITERATURE

Since students are highly motivated to using social media sites the majority of them use these to

satisfy their social needs more than their academic needs. They have the freedom to do whatever

they want-they can upload or download data, they can make new friends and comment on other

people’s lives, and they can even create other online identities the real world does not allow. It

has been observed too that the majority of the students nowadays, particularly those in the

secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their acquaintances, playing online

games, and watching videos instead of reading their lessons, making their assignments, and other

academic requirements. The main reason is when they work or search their materials online they

get attached to social networking sites to kill boredom during study time, diverting their attention

from their work. The darker side of this that has gained the attention of many parents is that some

students are getting lazier and are no longer interested in going to school

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According literature reviews, Social media year 2019. This research effort is targeted at finding

the effects of Social media on student’s performance. Therefore, the literature review discusses

the relevant research that is useful to the objectives of this research project. Several research

studies investigating the topic under review are found to be very recent. Since most of the

innovative features offered by social media platforms life Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,

Instagram, TikTok, and many others are not that old and the phenomenon of the use of these
media has boosted recently with the available. Most of the students chosen have been published

in the past four to five years

LOCAL STUDY

Reduced academic performance is one of the most important consequences of social networking

overuse for the students. The results of study on medical students showed that students who used

social networks and internet more than average had a poor academic achievement and low level

of concentration in the classroom. Past studies have found that students who spend more time on

social media sites are likely to demonstrate poor academic performance. This because they spend

time chatting online and making friends on social media sites instead of reading books

FOREIGN STUDY

Social media has created new possibilities for digitally native students to engage, interact and

collaborative in learning task that foster learning processes and the overall learning experience.

Using both qualitative and quantitative data, this article discusses experiences and challenges of

using a social media-enhanced collaborative learning environment in case-based teaching of

foreign languages. Based on social constructive argue that foreign language learning is an

individual as well as collaborative process and cognitive processes underlying learning and a

particular foreign language learning are facilitated by means of social media and especially fir

new generation of students. This article contributes to understanding of how best to make useful

of social media in an educational setting and how learning may be fostered in a social,

collaborative knowledge construction, sharing and building
