automatic pilot, and with its high-tech computers and cameras, your car "knows" how to get
you home safely.
What's for lunch? In the old days, you used to stop off to buy a hamburger or pizza. Now
you use your diagnostic machine to find out which food your body needs. You find out you
need more vegetables and less fat. Your food preparation machine makes you a salad.
After lunch, you go the hall to your home office. Here you have everything you need for
doing your work. Thanks to your information screen and your new computer, you almost
never go into the office any more. The information screen shows an urgent message from a
co-worker in Brazil. You set the screen to translate Portuguese into English. Then you read
and reply to the message.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 16 to 23.
Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have contributed to the growth of the
automotive industry through the creation and evolution of self-driving vehicles. As of 2016,
there are over 30 companies utilizing AI into the creation of self-driving cars. A few
companies involved with AI include Tesla, Google, and Apple.
Many components contribute to the functioning of self-driving cars. These vehicles
incorporate systems such as braking, lane changing, collision prevention, navigation and
mapping. Together, these systems, as well as high-performance computers, are integrated
into one complex vehicle.
Recent developments in autonomous automobiles have made the innovation of self-
driving trucks possible, though they are still in the testing phase. The UK government has
passed legislation to begin testing of self-driving truck platoons in 2018. Self-driving truck
Học Tiếng Anh cùng Thầy Chí Châu 3
platoons are a fleet of self-driving trucks following the lead of one non-self-driving truck, so
the truck platoons aren't entirely autonomous yet. Meanwhile, the Daimler, a German
automobile corporation, is testing the Freightliner Inspiration which is a semi-autonomous
truck that will only be used on the highway.
One main factor that influences the ability for a driverless automobile to function is
mapping. In general, the vehicle would be pre-programmed with a map of the area being
driven. This map would include data on the approximations of street lights and curb heights
in order for the vehicle to be aware of its surroundings. However, Google has been working
on an algorithm with the purpose of eliminating the need for pre-programmed maps and
instead, creating a device that would be able to adjust to a variety of new
surroundings. Some self-driving cars are not equipped with steering wheels or brake pedals,
so there has also been research focused on creating an algorithm that is capable of
maintaining a safe environment for the passengers in the vehicle through awareness of
speed and driving conditions.
Another factor that is influencing the ability for a driverless automobile is the safety of the
passenger. To make a driverless automobile, engineers must program it to handle high-risk
situations. These situations could include a head-on collision with pedestrians. The car's
main goal should be to make a decision that would avoid hitting the pedestrians and saving
the passengers in the car. But there is a possibility the car would need to make a decision
that would put someone in danger. In other words, the car would need to decide to save the
pedestrians or the passengers. The programming of the car in these situations is crucial to a
successful driverless automobile.
Question 14: The word "artificial" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to
A. supernatural B. related to art C. organic D. man-made
Question 15: Which of the following features is NOT MENTIONED in the driverless car?
A. The ability to avoid pedestrians and other vehicles
В. The ability to adjust its velocity and position
С. The ability to self-repair after a collision
D. The ability to recognize its surroundings and decide its route
Question 16: What is TRUE about the manufacture of driverless cars?
A. Many large corporations are involved in the development of cars with AI
B. The structure of these cars consists of various components which serve a single
purpose
C. The design of automatic cars is yet to become a reality

pedestrians
В. the estimated data of possible obstacles located along the path
С. the memory of the area which the car passed through
D. a radar which scans the area ahead of the vehicle for obstacles and pedestrians.
Question 19: What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A. Despite its function, mapping and navigation play merely a minor role in the car's
system.
В. The need for a more flexible navigating system is being seriously considered.
С. The need for pre-programmed maps in the construction of these cars is paramount.
D. The velocity and driving conditions have to be adjusted manually.
Question 20: The phrase "head-on collision with pedestrians" in the last paragraph
means ____________.
A. an injury caused by hitting pedestrians on their heads
