PHOTOSHOP FOR ARCHITECTURE

1. Setting up the interface

- Home screen and clipboard - Which will show all your recently opened projects

- Setting the sheet size and modifying the properties of the sheet

- Explain the difference between RGB and CMYK.

- Windows > layers/properties/colour and toolbar and options


- How to dock the panels on screen
- Shortcut - Windows > workspace > reset essentials

Edit > preferences > general (ctrl + k)

- In general: Check the ‘always import as smart objects option’. If someone is used to the older versions
of photoshop, they can check the legacy settings too
- In interface: Customization of the colours and sizing of the icons, text and workspace
- In workspace: Leave as default settings
- In tools: check the ‘zoom with scroll wheel’ option
- In history log: Leave as default settings
- In file handling: how to modify the auto save time
- In export: Leave as default settings
- In performance: Adjust memory usage to recommended and check the ‘use graphics processor’ option.
Adjust the history states to desired number(30-50 is optimal)
- Scratch disks: Check D drive option. If D drive is full you can also connect an external hard drive and
enable the scratch disk.
- In cursors: How to customise them
- In transparency and gamut: Leave as default settings
- In units and rulers: How to adjust units, how to show rulers in workspace (ctrl+r)
- In guides, grids and slices: How to customise the, how to show guides grids in workspace
- In plug-ins, type, 3d, tech reviews: Leave as default settings

2. Layers panel

- Create new layers. Properties of the layers, like how to change the thumbnail size, setting colours to
thumbnails
- Importance of naming layers, locking the layer, toggling the visibility of layers
- Import images and objects into photoshop x3 ways and move layers

3. Move tool and Transformations (V/Ctrl+T)

Move tool is the main command that you will be using to move various objects and images within the
layers. Transformation commands help in resizing and modifying the contents of the layer/selection.

- Selecting layers from the layers panel and the art board, auto select
- Edit > Free transform / Transform
- To change scale and rotation
- Other transformations like distort, perspective, skew and warp
- Flip horizontal and vertical (mirroring)

- Uniform transformation by holding shift in older versions


- Non-uniform transformation by holding shift in newer versions

4. Selection tools (M,L,W)

These are the most important tools that help select regions of images and different profiles, to make
modifications in terms of colour, size, deletions etc. These can be used in combination with one another
to make accurate selections

- Marquee tool: rectangular and elliptical

Hold shift to draw a square or circle

- Lasso tool: Regular, polygonal, magnetic

Backspace to remove an anchor point. Hover over the first point to close your selection

- Wand tool: tolerance

5. To fill colour

- Either with paint bucket tool (G) or Edit > Fill (shft + F5).
- How to set colour for foreground and background.
- Colour picker to set colour - using the eye dropper tool (I) to sample colours from images.

6. Layer style

Double click on layer to open layer style options from the layer panel. Some of the options in layer styles
and its properties relevant to plan rendering.

7. Defining patterns

- Loading an image which is seamless.

drag to make copy of the texture [4] Ctrl + T > Right click > Flip Horizontal [5] Repeat the process for

8. Brush tool (B)

This is a raster tool used to create varying effects using different colours and textures. It’s useful for
creating effects like watercolour effect, smoke effect and so on.

- Settings: Types, size, hardness, opacity, roundness, angle


- Scattering, jitter, spacing
- Loading new brushes into photoshop
- Defining custom brushes

9. Gradient tool (G)

- Settings: Types, opacity, preset gradients

10. Layer mask

This is a non destructive method to edit your layers. Creating a mask


helps you modulate the visibility of the layer without actually deleting
the data permanently

Raster tools like the brush, healing brush, stamp tools, eraser tools etc
make permanent changes to the layer by altering pixel data. So you
will not be able to control the effects and values at a later point while
working on your renders
