Moles Test
You will require a periodic table to answer some of the questions in this test.
Pay attention to significant figures and show your working clearly.
R = 8.31 J K-1 mol-1 NA = 6.02 x 1023 mol-1 volume of a gas at 273 K = 22.7 dm3 mol-1
1 How many hydrogen atoms are in one mole of ethanoic acid, CH 3COOH?
2 What is the coefficient of H2S when the following equation is balanced, using the smallest
possible integers?
__H2S (g) + __HNO3 (aq) __H2O (l) + __NO (g) + __S (s)
A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4
3 1 kg of a solution contains 0.100 mol of calcium ions, Ca 2+. What is the concentration of the
calcium ions by mass in parts per million (ppm)?
4 What is the volume (in cm3) of a 0.600 mol dm−3 solution of KOH needed for neutralization
in a titration with 45.0 cm3 of 0.200 mol dm−3 H2SO4?
5 What mass of Na2S2O3.5H2O is required to make 200 cm3 of a 0.100 mol dm-3 solution?
A 24.8 g B 4.96 g C 15.8 g D 3.16 g
6 What is the maximum mass of iron that can be produced from the reduction of 120 tonnes
of iron(III) oxide (Mr = 160), based on this equation?
7 What volume of sulfur trioxide, in cm 3, can be prepared using 60 cm3 sulfur dioxide and 20
cm3 oxygen gas by the following reaction? Assume all volumes are measured at the same
temperature and pressure.
A. 20 B. 40 C. 60 D. 80
8 1.00 g of H2 (g), and 16.0 g of oxygen gas, O2 (g), were mixed together under conditions
which allowed the reaction to go to completion, according to the following equation.
2H2(g) + O2(g) 2H2O(g)
At the end of the reaction, the reaction vessel will contain
A water only B hydrogen and water only
C oxygen and water only D hydrogen, water and oxygen
HIGHER LEVEL IB MOLES TEST 2014
9 A sample of ideal gas occupies a volume of 100 cm 3 at 2 atm and 27oC.
What volume will it occupy at 1 atm and 327 oC?
6.40 g of SO2 produces 6.40 g of SO3. What is the percentage yield of sulphur trioxide?
A 100 B 80 C 50 D 40
Calculate the concentration (in mol dm −3) of the nitric acid. [3]
(b) A solution containing 0.142 mol aqueous nitric acid was added to a solution
containing 0.107 mol barium hydroxide. Calculate the amount (in mol) of barium
nitrate formed. [2]
(c) A 0.010 mol sample of the barium nitrate formed was heated until it had completely
decomposed according to the following equation.
Use the ideal gas equation to calculate the total volume, in cm 3, of gaseous products
obtained at 387 K and 1.12 x105 Pa. [3]
(b) Calculate the volume of chlorine (at s.t.p.) needed to produce 7.19 g of phosphorus
pentachloride. [2]
13 When 3.02 g of compound J, which contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only, is burnt in
excess oxygen 4.43 g CO2 and 1.81 g H2O are produced.
5.00 g of hydrated iron(II) sulphate (FeSO 4.xH2O) are dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid
and made up to a total volume of 250.0 cm 3. 25.00 cm3 of this solution is titrated
against 0.0200 mol dm -3 potassium manganate(VII). 22.30 cm 3 of potassium
manganate(VII) was required for complete reaction.
15 A bottle of a white crystalline salt was found in a cupboard. All that was left of the label is
shown in the diagram. 6.559 g of the substance was dissolved in water and made up to a
total volume of 50.00 cm3. 10.00 cm3 of this solution was reacted with 25 cm 3 of 2.0 mol dm-
3
silver nitrate solution (this was an excess). The precipitate was filtered off, washed, dried
and weighed. The total mass of precipitate formed was 1.410 g. Work out the element
missing from the formula of the substance. [4]
