11 (a) A 25.0 cm3 sample of an aqueous solution of barium hydroxide, of concentration

0.130 mol dm−3 was exactly neutralized by 28.7 cm 3 of aqueous nitric acid, according
to the following equation.

Ba(OH)2(aq) + 2HNO3(aq)  Ba(NO3)2(aq) + 2H2O(l)

Calculate the concentration (in mol dm −3) of the nitric acid. [3]

Moles of Ba(OH)2 = (25/1000) x 0.130 = 3.25 x 10 -3 mol;

Moles of HNO3 = moles of Ba(OH)2 x 2 = 6.5 x 10-3 mol;

Conc of HNO3 = 6.5 x 10-3 / 0.0287 = 0.226 mol dm-3;

(penalise incorrect sig figs for this question only)

(b) A solution containing 0.142 mol aqueous nitric acid was added to a solution
containing 0.107 mol barium hydroxide. Calculate the amount (in mol) of barium
nitrate formed. [2]

Limiting reactant identified as nitric acid;

Moles of barium nitrate formed = 0.142 / 2 = 0.071 mol;

(c) A 0.010 mol sample of the barium nitrate formed was heated until it had completely
decomposed according to the following equation.

2Ba(NO3)2(s)  2BaO(s) + 4NO2(g) + O2(g)

Use the ideal gas equation to calculate the total volume, in cm 3, of gaseous products
obtained at 387 K and 1.12 x105 Pa. [3]

Moles of gas produced = 0.010 x (5/2) = 0.025;

V = (0.025 x 8.31 x 387) / 1.12 x 10 5;

V = 7.18 x 10-4 m3 = 718 cm3; (answer must be cm3)

12 Phosphorus reacts with excess chlorine to produce phosphorus pentachloride, PCl 5.

2P(s) + 5Cl2(g) → 2PCl5(s)

(a) Calculate the mass of phosphorus needed to produce 7.19 g of phosphorus

pentachloride. [2]

Moles of PCl5 = 7.19 / 208.22 = 0.0345 mol;

Moles of P = 0.0345 thus Mass of P formed = 0.0345 x 30.97 = 1.07 g;

(b) Calculate the volume of chlorine (at s.t.p.) needed to produce 7.19 g of phosphorus
pentachloride. [2]

Moles of Cl2 = 0.0345 x (5/2) = 0.0863 mol;

Volume of Cl2 = 0.0863 x 22.7 = 1.96 dm3;

13 When 3.02 g of compound J, which contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only, is burnt in
excess oxygen 4.43 g CO2 and 1.81 g H2O are produced.

Calculate the empirical formula of J. [5]

Moles of CO2 = 4.43 / 44.01 = 0.101 mol

and
Moles of H = (1.81 / 18.02) x 2 = 0.201 mol;

Mass of C = 0.101 x 12.01 = 1.21 g

and
Mass of H = 0.201 x 1.01 = 0.203 g;

Mass of oxygen = 3.02 – (1.21 + 0.203) = 1.61 g;

Moles of O = 1.61 / 16.00 = 0.101 mol;

Ratio of moles C:H:O=1:2:1

Empirical formula is CH2O;

14 Potassium manganate(VII) may be used to determine the concentration of iron(II) (Fe 2+) ions
in solution. The reaction is a REDOX reaction and the MnO 4- oxidises Fe2+ to Fe3+. The
ionic equation for the reaction is:

MnO4-(aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) + 8H+(aq)  Mn2+(aq) + 5Fe3+(aq) + 4H2O(l)

5.00 g of hydrated iron(II) sulphate (FeSO 4.xH2O) are dissolved in dilute sulphuric acid
and made up to a total volume of 250.0 cm 3. 25.00 cm3 of this solution is titrated
against 0.0200 mol dm -3 potassium manganate(VII). 22.30 cm 3 of potassium
manganate(VII) was required for complete reaction.

Determine the number of moles of water of crystallisation in FeSO 4.xH2O. [5]

Moles KMnO4 = 0.02230 x 0.0200 = 4.46 x 10 -4 mol;

Moles of Fe2+ = 4.46 x 10-4 x 5 = 2.23 x 10-3 mol

and
Moles of FeSO4 in 250 cm3 = 2.23 x 10-3 x 10 = 0.0223 mol;

Mass of FeSO4 in 250 cm3 = 0.0223 x 151.91 = 3.39 g;

Mass of H2O = 5.00 – 3.39 = 1.61 g

and
Moles of H2O = 0.161 / 18.02 = 0.0895;

x = 0.0895 / 0.0223 = 4(.01);
