Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The COVID-19 Pandemic has inflicted such trouble on everyone’s lives. One of

which is the impacted learning opportunities, especially those in large groups or

involving person-to-person interaction. The changed format is likely to impact learning

pedagogy, affecting both students and, most especially, the teachers. This requires a

systematic approach to evaluation of online teaching and learning adaptation in

comparison to the previous format, where in-person education may have been the focus

(Arunaz Kumar et al., 2021).

The schools were required to shift to distance learning because of the pandemic.

A huge difference happened to our learning system. Teachers and students experienced

different problems adjusting to the new normal education. Due to the pandemic,

educators were forced to fill these imbalances and redouble their efforts to meet students'

academic, physical, and social-emotional needs (Vargas, 2020). As a result of this

change, education has undergone significant transformations, with the rise of e-learning,

in which instruction is done remotely and via digital platforms. However, there are

obstacles to overcome. Some teachers and students find it difficult to engage in online

learning because they do not have consistent internet access or technology; this divide

exists across countries (Li and Lalani,2020).Time management is tough for students, and

it is one of the most difficult aspects of online distance learning for teachers. While

teaching from home saves time and money by eliminating commutes, online teachers

intention, and actual use of technology. Consequently, the successful may find

themselves with additional responsibilities such as moderating discussion boards,

checking notifications, updating class websites, sharing and uploading resources for

students, and responding to an increased number of emails. (National University, 2020).

With all the problems mentioned above, every teacher must learn to overcome in

whatever way possible and learn to hold the attention of his or her class as best as he or

she can. These challenges can be solved with the right support from the government.

There are now more specialized software solutions available (View Sonic, 2021).

There are currently a lot of studies about the experiences of teachers in online

learning, but only a few of them give an effective solution to the given problem.

Researchers seek to describe the experiences of senior high school teachers in order to

improve and increase the efficiency of online distance learning.

Statement of the Problem

The overall objective of this phenomenological study is to describe the challenges

of Senior High School Teachers in online learning at Colegio de Sta.Ana de Victorias

S.Y. 2021-2022.

Specifically, this research seeks to comprehend the following questions:

•How would the senior high school teachers describe the challenges in online learning?

•What kind of coping strategies do the senior high school teachers engage in to manage

the challenges in online learning?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The focus of this study is to determine the challenges experienced by the Senior

High School Teachers of Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias Academic Year 2021-2022.

The respondents of this study will be the Senior High School Teachers who experienced

power disruption and intermittent internet connection during online learning in Colegio

de Sta. Anna de Victorias.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the theory of Well-known and widely used model,

Technology Accepted Model (TAM) by Davis (1986).According to TAM, there are five

elements that influence people's attitudes, intentions, and how they utilize information

systems. These five factors include attitude toward use, ease of use, perceived usefulness,

behavioral implementation of educational technology depends largely on teachers'

attitudes towards technology, which eventually influence their use in instruction (Albirini

2006, Buabeng-Andoh, 2012).

This study is relevant to the researcher's study because it pertains that when the

teachers have a positive perspective toward the use of technology in class and find the

features of the system to be beneficial and easy to use, then there is a high likelihood of

its successful adaptation and implementation for teaching and learning in Colegio de Sta.

Ana de Victorias.

Conceptual Framework

Education delivered over the internet is referred to as “online learning.” This

pandemic has clearly had an impact on education. As a result, education has changed

dramatically, with teachers now using digital platforms to teach. It is necessary to learn

about the experiences of senior high school teachers in implementing online learning.

The participants in the study will be chosen in order for them to share their own

experiences with online teaching. Researchers can learn about the challenges that

teachers face in online learning by conducting interviews with participants using

questionnaires. Through content analysis, the data will be grouped into meaningful

patterns or themes. The data will be used to draw the study’s conclusion, and the result of

the study will serve as the basis for the administration, heads, and faculty to provide

better online learning experiences for senior high school teachers.

Significance of the Study

The result of the study can give deep perception to explore the

challenges experienced by the senior high school teachers with the aim that

findings would prove beneficial to the following:

To the teachers. The results may serve as an inspiration for them to

keep improving their skills especially in using technology and come up with

new strategies to make online learning more effective.

To administrators. The findings of the study will help them in

determining the need of teachers to make teaching online more manageable.

To students. The findings may give students assurance that they are not

only the ones who’s experiencing some issues in online learning and the

research may give them idea on how they can adjust with the situations.

Definition of Terms

In this study the following terms will be used with these definitions.

Online learning. Engaging in learning through the Internet on any type of device, in real-

time or through recorded or written information.

Coping strategies. Typically involve a conscious and direct approach to problems, in

contrast to defense mechanisms.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This will be a qualitative study that will use the Phenomenology technique to

describe the challenges faced by the senior high school teachers at Colegio de Sta. Ana de

Victorias in online learning. According to Neubauer et al. (2019), phenomenological

study often requires understanding the experiences of others so that we can glean new

insights about a particular phenomenon. Phenomenology is defined as an approach to

research that seeks to describe the essence of a phenomenon by exploring it from the

perspective of those who have experienced it. Thus, this research was conducted to gather

the personal views and experiences of senior high school teachers at Colegio de Sta. Ana

de Victorias.

Data Collection

Interviews will be conducted with the senior high school teachers of Colegio de

Sta. Ana de Victorias. Teachers will be asked about the challenges of online teaching.

The researchers will conduct an interview to gather information over a period of one

week. The data will be collected and documented by the researchers. Interpretation of the

data and recommendations will be discussed and confirmed with the participants.

Sampling Method

This study will use purposive sampling. Purposive sampling, also known as

judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling, is a form of non-probability sampling in

which researchers rely on their own judgment when choosing members of the population

to participate in their surveys (Alchemer, 2021).

Participants of the Research

The participants selected will be the senior high school teachers of Colegio de Sta.

Ana de Victorias for the school year 2021–2022. Participants must be senior high school

teachers who have dealt with difficulties during a pandemic. Moreover, he/she must have

experience with online learning.

Research Instrument

Semi-structured interview is a more flexible version of the structured interview as

“it allows depth to be achieved by allowing the interviewer to probe and expand the

interviewee’s responses” (Rubin & Rubin, 2005: 88). When conducting such interviews,

the researchers suggest utilizing a basic checklist to ensure that all important areas are

covered. The checklist provides for in-depth questioning while allowing the interviewer

to stay within the limitations established by the study’s goal.

Data Analysis

The data will be collected, documented, interpreted and verified. The process of

transcribing the interviews can help the researcher to gain more understanding of the

subject from repeatedly listening and reading the transcribed interviews. Coding the data

will begin once all the data will be fully documented. The codes applied are keywords

which are used to categorize or organize text and are considered an essential part of

qualitative research.

The data will be evaluated, analyze, and organize into themes and sub-themes

that emerged throughout the coding process. The next stage will be interpreting the data

by identifying any reoccurring themes throughout and highlighting any similarities and

differences in the data. The final stage is the data verification; this process involves a

process of checking validity of understanding by rechecking the transcripts and codes.

Ethical Procedures

According to DB Resnik (2020), ethics can also be defined as a method,

procedure, or perspective for determining how to act and analyzing complex problems

and issues. To ensure that ethical considerations are taken into account, permission will

be sought from the school principal and SHS coordinator to officially conduct the data

collection. The researchers will inform potential participants about the study’s specifics,

such as its duration, activities, and location. In addition, before the researchers begin

collecting data through a series of interviews, the conversation partners will be given

informed consent forms to sign.
