1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION VX-DRYERS

The VX--dryer is ~ heat regenerated adsorption dryer which comprices two

towers.
-These are interacting and the exchage of operating mode takes place automati-
cally.
. .
The dryer is designad for continuous operation which means that it. has been
designed far high reliabifity and availability. Due to this a minimum of over-
haul/service is required.
The VX-dryer is in standard version designed for very·1ow energy consumption
by built in heating elements .which makes the radiant heat efficintly utilizad

\~....~ : A s~ecial desiccant is used in order to optimiza and secure a low dew--poi~t
· ., =" at the same time as a low regeneration temperatura is obtainéd.

lf the dryer is equippecl with a dew-point control system ,altcompressor cont-

rol system, the energy consumption can be recluced by more than 50 %.
This in combination with the unique and patented valve system makes the dryer ·
one of the most cost efficient dryers on the market
* Low energy consumption.
_ * Low maintenance and overhaul costs.
* Easy service.
- * High availability and reliability.

1.1 DESICCANT .
( The · desiccant consists of ~ type beads of two types. At the bottom
-:..:-·__,..., of each tower a water r e s i ~ e W is used. On top type R is used which
has a favourable dehydration capacity due to the large specific pore surfa-
ce area.
The even.round shape of the beads and their vitreos. glossy surface give an
evenly distributed flow, low pressure drop (less than 0.1 bar),low · friction
and very little dust emission.
The estimated servicelife of the desiccant is 3-4 years.

1.2 ADSORPTION
During the adsorption mode. wet compressed air from the intake enters the
bottom of the drying tower and flows upwards through the the bed where the
desiccant beads efficiently adsorbs the humidity.

1.3 REGENERATION
A small part dried, compressed air expands in the heat distributor of the
exhausted tower, where it is heated up. The heated and dried air flows from
thei top downwards and moves the previous adsorbed water out through the
exhause valves.
•After about 3-hrs the heat is switched off. expanded dry air continous to
flow down through the tower to further improve the regeneration and to cool
itdown.
1.4 INTERACTION OF TOWERS
lnteraction and regeneration modes occure automatically by means of an
eledronic programmer.
'·, -Normal cycle time is 4-hrs.
¡,; __,
....·
~

When a dew-point control system is used the intervals can be prolonged.Fe-

wer occations fer regeneration offer lower energy consumption and prolong
the adsorption ability of the desiccanl
-Prior to interaction oftowers, a pressure equalisation will
be made to prevent pressure chocks.
~oon after intera~on of towers the temperatura of the compressed air can
nse to about +60 C. After 5 minutes the temperature will drop back -to nor-
mal. .

1.5 OVERHEATING

;:. To prevent overheating of the dryer,it has been equipped with three pressu-
re guards. These will control that heat is not tumed on in the tower which
is pressuriled.(pos 821,822 #)
-lf the inlet air pressure gets lower than the normal 5 bar the electric
current to the heating elements will be switched off.(pos 823 #)

1.6 PROGRAMMER TYPE STEP- T (OnlyVX-3-VX-10)

The dryer is monitored by a timer type STEP-T, which is an electronic counter

with prcgrammable time cycle.

* The timer is equipped with a battery whitch keeps the preset programme,in
case the supply of electric power fails.
• The service life of this battery is estimated to 1O years.

* Normally the- programmer is operating on the same electric voltage as the

the dryer itseff.

lt is very easy to check which step the programmer is working at ,by reading
the display at the mark •step"
•The display also indicates the "outputsn which are activated.

Normally the programmer is set to interact tower and regenerate each 4 th hrs.
The different steps are as follows: ·

The timer stops automatically if the pressure drops under a certain leve! and/
or if the switch (S 1 #) is set in stop position.
When the power returns the programmer will continue from the step where the
drop out occured.

The ptogrammer can also be operated manually by pressing the button martced
"man step". Thus the whole program can be run step by step.
-Waming.lf the dryer is working in step 1 or 6 the programmer must be turnd

1.8 DRYING OF COMPRESSED AIR

In order to get a well operating system there are sorne parameters which have
to be considerad. · .. ·

* The inlet temperature must not exceed + aoºc.

"' The dryer must not operate at a lower operating pressure than what it has
been designed for.

lf · any of these two parameters is changed the capacity of the dryer will also
change.

A temperature of the compressed ajr lower than +30 °c does not result in a
smaller size of dryer as the velocity of the air through the dryer will be
.U)e same, however the interaction intervals can be prolonged.
This is best done by the installation of a dewpoin~nalyser.

An extension of the operating intervals will result in a lower energy con-

sumption.

2. INSTALLATION

Our adsorption dryers are normally supplied fully assembled and ready for use.
Ali you have to do is connect the INLET and OUTLET pipes and power supply.

Adsorption dryers and filters should be installed in the following order:

Jnstal!ation
Dry.r.g p!anr ano f:,~~ Dry air for irlstru-
, - - - - - , men~. tr.Jl"ISport
ofchJcrine,,su/ptlur

fJter Adsorpl/Ol1S cJtyer
Air receiver ('whe<¡ roqt;ireo) /)1)6 LX

The adsorption dryer should be fitted downstream from the airtank in a room
','.'here the temperature does not exceed 45 C and never falls below +1 C.lf there
=s a risk of frost.the fower section of the dryer and pipes system must be
;¡ rotected against freezing.

!f the compressor is oil-lubricated, a type VO degreasingfi!ter must be fitted

upstream of the dryer. This will prevent the dryer granules becoming contamina-
t2d with oil, which would quickly reduce their adsorption capacity.
The filter also protects the dryer granulars against showers of condensate,
('~) providing that 1t is fitted with guaranteed double automatic draining .
. _. ) ' .
CONDENSATE SEPARATION UPSTREAM OF THE DRYER IS PARTICULARLY
IMPORTANT.

Note that the air tank or fluid-separating filler with double draining system.
shou!d always be fitted upstream adsorption dryer to prevent water blows in
the drying towers.
Toe draíning system must be capable of being monitored and maintaíned continu-
osly.Only if the condensate removal system.is working 100% can full adsorption
drying be guaranteed.

Downstream of the dryer should be fitted a type LO dust filter to absorb dust
etc,from the dryer granules.

The VO degreasing filler and LO dust filter are norma!ly capable of running
far a who!e yea(s continuos operation.lf the dust filter is not duplicated
the filler should be provided with a bypass facility to enable filters to be
replaced during operation. The dust filter should afso be fitted with a manome-
ter to enable the pressure drop to be monitored.

The filter and dryer can be placed directly on the floor, but are often mounted
on sh?es.a Jow plinth or foundations. , . ·

USERS MANUAL
OPERATING ANO MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTION

In positioning füter and dryer, consideration should be g1ven to the abi!ity

to carry out rapid servicing on each component.
The flange cbnnection on the VO degreasing filter and LO dust filters should
be easy to unscrew and should not therefore be located in a comer ar tight
agaínst a wa/1.Make sure that there is room above the filler to enable filter
inserts to be removed.

ln princip!e,the air dryer should be positioned so that it is possible to

walk around it, i.e.it shou/d not be less than 600 mm from a wa/1.There
should be at least 800 mm of clear space in front of the dryer.
The premises where the dryer is /ocated should be well ventilated.

During the initial condenstion phase, some condensate water may fa!! on the
fl oor from the d rying tower being regenerated. This wi!l evapora te after a
while,however,an-a need not cause any inconvenience.Fore large dryers,it may
e be desirab/e to drain off the moist regeneration ouffiow.A drain pipe should
be connected to the dryer with a soft fitting. The drain pipe shou!d be larger
than the-cannectíon of the exhaust valve.

INSTALLATION

lt is of vital importance that the dryer is correct installed in order to get

the dryer to operate properly.
In order .to fulfifl the obligations far · the guarantee to be valid folloing
items have to be considerad;
De-oiling filter always has to be installed if tlie compressor delíver oil in
the compressed áir.
As standard for the smaller dryers they are ready for operation at delivery.
For VX-7 and larger dryers the desiccant in delivered beside the dryers. This
-.,_ is to make handling, transportation and installation of the dryers easyer.
- The desiccant has to be filled up by the customer himself. lnstruction is
included in the documentation of the dryer.
2.1 Check before the dryer has been installed.
Make sure that the air tubes/pipes fmm the compressor to the dryer are
dean and free from welding cinder and/or waste in generaJ.
- lt is advisable to blow the tubes with compressed air before the dryer
· is connected to the system.
2.2 Checks when the dryer has been installed.
J.lake sure that the inlet air pipe is connected ·to the inlet of the dryer( the
lower flange connection) and the outlet pipe to the outiet of the dryer.
( Upper connection)
Check that the dryer is fed by the correct electric current,~ the socket is
connected to earth and that proper fuses are used.
\ .:·~ Make a general check of ali connections ,hoses couplings etc. to ensure that
they not have been damaged during transportation.

3. OPERATION ·

3.1 Checks when th~ dryer is to be started.

The valve for the manouve:h\g air (item 12 #) and the valve for regenera-
tion air (ítem 7 #) have to be open.
1. Open the valva between the compressor and the dryer qentJy.
2. Open the valve for the outJet air. Shut the by.pass valve connection if
available.
3 •.Put the switch (S1 #) in posltion. START. lñe dryer will start automati-
cally.

3.2 Checks when the dryer is in operation

3.4.1 The dryer must not be op~rated at a lower pressure than designed working
pressure. Check.

3.4.2 The inlet temperatura must not exceed stated temperature. Nonnally 30°c.
Check the temperature.

3.4.3 Check that interaction of towe~ takes place and that the towers are
hOted up during the regeneration mode. .
3.4.4 Check that the water drainage system/devices prior to the dryer works
efficiently.

, 3.3 START/ST0P 0F DRYER T0WARDS AN EMPTY NET.

lf start and stop of dryer towards an empty air system often takes place ,
i.e every shift,it is important that a valve is installed between the
compressor and the dryer.
- This is to prevent a too high airffow through the dryer.
A too high airffow trough the dryer causes the desiccant beds to start
moving and creates dust
