GHP Semifinalist: Biology

Dear Interviewers,

I would like to attend Governor's Honors Program so that I can receive a more
well rounded education in Biology. As a child, I enjoyed Biology before I even
fully knew what Biology was. I now have a formal education in Biology, but I
don't feel that I have been able to fully experience all Biology has to offer. I
attend a public school in a small town. We do not have sufficient funding for
many of our education programs, including science. While I am lucky enough to
have labs and to be able to take a lab-based class this year, we do not have a lot
of the equipment needed to perform basic Biology experiments. Attending GHP
would allow me to pursue my passion to its full extent. With better equipment
and an almost completely Biology based classroom, I could finally see what
Biology truly is. These opportunities would allow me to bring my full passion to
the classroom. I would be able to contribute so much more because I would be
able to learn so much more. GHP would allow me to see what Biology will be
like in college, giving me insight into my future career. This opportunity will
allow me to be much more involved in learning.

I have been studying Biology since I was about six years old. For every birthday
and Christmas I would ask for things like microscopes or anatomy models so I
could study independently. I would look at hairs and nails and blades of grass
under my microscope. I would take apart and reconstruct my anatomy models
until I had the placement of every organ memorized. From the ages of five to
ten I attended summer camps that studied nature and animals so I could learn
even when I wasn't in school. Now that I'm older I've been able to learn more
than ever before. Outside of school related activities and volunteering, I enjoy
just having conversations about Biology. I watch medical shows like Botched
and Doctor Pimple Popper. I also enjoy discussing medical concepts with family
friends that work in doctor's offices.

Thank you for your consideration and time. I hope to be given more
opportunities to show my skills and passion at the Governor's Honors Program
this summer.
