BACK TO SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
SELF-PORTRAIT
Creating self portraits was one of the very first activities I did each year in my
own classroom. It is an activity that children can do independently, it will show
progress later in the year, and most importantly it is a great way to take your
first informal assessment of the new year.
As the students complete their drawings, observe their…
work habits time management skills
social interactions with peers methods for handling mistakes

AUTOBIOGRAPHY POEM
Students respond to prompts to create a draft of an
autobiographical poem. After a quick edit, you can either have
them do a final copy on the included (prompt-free) sheet,
handwrite it all on a blank paper, or type and print the poem.
You can display them next to the self-portrait frame above by
attaching both pages to a 12x18 piece of construction paper.
These are beautiful keepsakes that families will cherish for years
to come.
CLASSMATE BINGO
To begin, choose the version that is best for your students.
If you’re using the version on the left, write each student’s
name in the “my classmates” box in before making copies.

If you’re using one of the versions from below, write your

students’ names in each of the three columns on the page
to the right, copy the page and cut each copy into 3 lists.
Instruct the students to:
•Complete the All About Me section.
•Write 1 classmate’s name in each of the boxes.
•Cut along the lines to detach the All About
Me boxes from the Bingo board.
Collect the student info sections. Shuffle the
student info sections and select one to begin.
Read the sentences. See if anyone can guess
who is being described before reading
the name at the end.

Students mark that space on their

bingo board. Whoever covers a
series of consecutive boxes in a row,
a column, or a diagonal line is the
winner of that round.

GET TO KNOW ME GAZETTE
Students use words and/or pictures to complete this
personal newspaper about themselves. You can use
the completed pages to create a bulletin board
display, bind them into a class book, or encourage
them to share their work with others by reading their
“newspaper” as a presentation to the class.
Two versions are included for you to select from.

HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION

The first week of school would not be complete
without the classic “How I Spent My Summer
Vacation” activity. Included, you’ll find a
couple options. There is an illustrations only
worksheet. Students can use this page to
illustrate some highlights of their summer. There
are also two versions of writing paper. The first
has traditional lines and the other has primary-
ruled lines to support students who may need
guidance.
Some teachers combine the writing and the illustrating
pages for a more comprehensive activity.

ALL ABOUT ME POEM Start by giving each student a copy of the

poem planner and instruct them to brainstorm
ideas in each of the boxes. They should list
multiple possibilities for each prompt.
Next, give them a copy of the second page.
Have them select one response to complete
each sentence.

GUESS THE CLASSMATE

This activity was designed to be displayed
on an interactive bulletin board. Students love
trying to figure out who each classmate is! These
are also a lot of fun for open house, meet the
teacher night, or as a hallway display during
parent teacher conferences.

NEW SCHOOL YEAR K-W-L
This activity is a great way to introduce or review how to use a K-W-L chart. Students first brainstorm
a list of things they already know about their new grade level (or classroom or teachers). Next, they
generate a list of questions they have in the middle column.

Bring the class together to share their lists. You may want to compile them into a master list on an
anchor chart. Finally, at the end of the 1st week of school, redistribute the worksheets and have the
students complete the last column by recording things they learned about their new grade.

ALTERNATE
OPTIONS

© THE CLUTTER-FREE CLASSROOM | www.JodiDurgin.com

MATH ABOUT ME
These worksheets were intentionally designed to provide flexibility in how they are used. Start by
selecting the page(s) you wish to use. All three options are shown below. To complete the activity,
students fill the space with numbers that relate specifically to them.

Examples:
2 = the number of dogs I have
9 = my age
154 = my house number

But, there’s more to it! Instead of writing numerals,

they must show the number using math concepts.
Examples:
16 - 7 = my age
my house number =

MATH ABOUT ME (ALTERNATE OPTION)

We’ve included an alternate “Math About Me” printable that provides
a bit more guidance for students. You may want to begin with this
option to spark ideas and then have them complete one of the open-
ended activities. You could also use this option for younger learners or
as a modification for students who need additional support

NEW CLASSROOM SCAVENGER HUNT

FIND OBJECTS
This activity can be done in pairs or
individually. The students explore their new
classroom and record something that fits into
each category onto the chart. They can either
use words, pictures, or labeled illustrations to
document their findings.

FIND PEOPLE
In this version, students
mingle and chat with
classmates, The goal is to
find at least one person
who fits into each of the
boxes. This activity helps
students to get to know
one another and learn
the names of their
classmates.

© THE CLUTTER-FREE CLASSROOM | www.JodiDurgin.com

CREATE A TIME CAPSULE

This set of 6 activities can be completed alone or combined

to create a time capsule to revisit and reflect on in the future.
In my classroom, I had my students complete these activities at the start of the
new school year and again at the end of the year. It was always a fun way to
show their growth.
This set includes:
a collection of their favorite their things (2 versions)
a handprint (either painted and stamped or simply traced)
a handwriting sample (perhaps the alphabet or a dictated sentence)
a list of things the student hopes to learn about that year (2 versions)
a picture of the student (a drawn self-portrait and/or a photo)

DOODLE DRAWINGS
This activity shows that everyone is unique
and that people often see things differently.
The black squiggles are the start of a picture.

Encourage the children to use their

imaginations to incorporate each squiggle
into a drawing. This is also a nice activity to
do at the start and end of a school year to
show personal growth in each student.

© THE CLUTTER-FREE CLASSROOM | www.JodiDurgin.com

ALL ABOUT ME: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY
This is a 4 page set. It includes differentiated lined
paper and a drawing paper titled, “All About Me.”
Students use these pages to write or illustrate about
themselves. These activities are great to do at the
beginning, middle and end of each school year as they
really show the progress the child has made as a writer
and artist. They also make a quick and easy bulletin
board display.

CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY

This activity is a good refresher on Venn Diagrams. Pair students
together to have conversations and discover what they have in
common and what makes them unique. This is an activity I would have
my students do each morning at the start of the school year until
everyone had the chance to meet with each of their classmates. It
helped to build friendships and ensured all of my students had time to
get to know all of their peers.

LET US KNOW IF…

Students LOVE this activity. It helps you learn more about them and lets
them get to know one another. It is another activity that is especially
good for minimizing those first day jitters because it allows students to
participate simply by raising their hands.

To use the activity: Cut apart the cards and read one at a time. If the
statement applies to a child, he/she raises their hand. Encourage the
students to take a minute to look around and learn about their
classmates.

WOULD YOU RATHER . . . ?

There are many ways to use these fun
and silly question cards. Pose the
question and have your students
respond with hand signals, A or B
cards, or different colors of paper.

Some teachers use them as writing

prompts.

You could even make copies of the

deck of cards and have the students
discuss them in small groups or with a
partner.
