The smell of chalk laced the air, and anxiety shuddered me as I beheld the board: "a2+b2=c2". Ms.
Esa's eyebrow raised, requesting proof beyond memorization. Thoughts scurried my mind like rats
until a hush blanketed the classroom as she unveiled the complexity beneath the equation with
geometry, tessellation, and algebra. Later, my sleeplessness spurred a craving to attempt my own
proof; yet no matter how hard I tried, nothing emerged.
I always felt disconnected from my three older brothers—the last of whom left for abroad before I
even began seventh grade. Yet when I could not find a starting point for the mathematical proofs I
wanted to write, I mustered the courage to ask my eldest brother for help. The roadmap he set me
on was a success—propelling me from Set Theory, Logic, Calculus, Number Theory, Algebraic
Geometry, and Counting & Probability—all in one summer!
In admiration, my brother then shipped me a book from the US—‘The USSR Olympiad Problem
Book’—the first gift I’d received from him. Reveling in the thrill of the treasure hunt, I tracked every
problem from page to page. To work out puzzles demanding circuitous thought and creative logic
was the most rewarding feeling of satisfaction! With every task conquered, a stronger connection
was forged between my brother and me—one where I no longer felt isolated at home.
I longed to prove my prowess in math, but with little money to fund my journey, I had no choice but
to take the soccer money I’d saved for new cleats and register for the CEATS Math Contest
instead. My sacrifice paid off; I placed fifth out of four hundred and could buy the cleats with the
prize money. The following year, my school offered to cover my trip and entry fee, and I seized the
opportunity, coming away with a gold medal. I continued to attend competitions and was selected
twice to attend the International Math Olympiad (IMO) study camp, making it into the top 30 out of
7000 students in Pakistan.
As I attended the IMO study camp, a humbling realization began to set in as it became apparent
that I lacked the same level of proficiency as some of my peers. I shared this anxious sentiment
with my roommate, Aadil, a humble yet wealthy young man from Karachi who I had forged a strong
bond with. Aadil revealed his parents had afforded him a private instructor since the age of six,
providing a nurturing environment to cultivate his excellence. Reflecting on this reminded me of
my struggles in our educational system just a few years prior, which does not truly foster creative
mathematical insight.
Mathematics has been a journey of self-exploration for me, of gaining insight into the various
puzzles and patterns which shape my world. It has allowed me to build new and meaningful
My inward journey has enabled me to bring change to this world and positively impact it for
present and future generations. My once mathematically structured universe has become
something much more grandiose, a grand theorem whose conclusion is still yet to be seen, but
one that I could not be more thrilled to explore.
