a) Given that 𝑓(𝑥) = −𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 4, find:

b) Using the Factor and Remainder Theorem, show that 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 3𝑥 − 𝑥 − 3 is exactly divisible by
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 3. Hence, express 𝑔(𝑥) as a product of all its linear factors.
c) The expression 2𝑥 3 + 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 6 is exactly divisible by 𝑥 − 2 and gives a remainder of −12 when
divided by 𝑥 + 1. Calculate the values of a and b, and factorize the expression completely.
d) Find the constants p, q and r such that 2𝑦 2 − 9𝑦 + 14 ≡ 𝑝(𝑦 − 1)(𝑦 − 2) + 𝑞(𝑦 − 1) + 𝑟.
e) Simplify the following algebraic expression:

b) Solve the following exponential equations, giving your answer correct to 3 significant figures:
i. 22𝑥 − 2𝑥+1 + 1 = 0
ii. 4𝑥 − 3(2𝑥 ) + 2 = 0
c) Solve the following logarithmic equations, giving your answer correct to 3 significant figures:
i. log 9 𝑥 + log 9 (𝑥 − 8) = 1
ii. log 3 [7 + log 4 [13 + log 2 (𝑥 + 4)]] = 2
iii. log 3 (𝑥 + 1) = log 4 (𝑥 + 8)

Question 4 – Coordinate Geometry


a) The line joining point 𝐴(𝑎, 4) to point 𝐵(2, −2) is perpendicular to the line joining point 𝐶(10,2) to
point B. Find the value of a.
b) Find the equation of the straight line that passes through (5,3) and is parallel to 2𝑦 = 𝑥 − 4.
c) In the diagram below, NOT DRAWN TO SCALE, M is the mid-point of AB. MN is perpendicular to
the straight line through A, M and B. P is the point at which the line MN meets the y-axis and Q is the
point at which the line meets the x-axis.
