Green Cloud Computing
Green Cloud Computing
reduce carbon footprints and create a more sustainable environment. All major public cloud
providers, including Microsoft, AWS, and Google, have adopted renewable energy resources for
operating their data centers as part of an initiative to implement Green Cloud Computing.
In an exciting study, Google, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and North-western University
discovered that moving popular software applications used by approximately 86 million US workers
to the cloud would reduce energy consumption by 87%. The same study emphasizes that the
widespread adoption of cloud computing has reduced data.
Centre energy consumption by 31% from 2010 to 2020. According to industry research, adopting
public clouds can reduce CO2 emissions by 59 million tonnes annually, equivalent to taking 22
million cars off the road.
The public cloud data centers are typically located near the power sources that provide electricity for
their operations. As a result, transmission losses are minimized. This benefit does not apply to
traditional corporate data centers installed as on-premises infrastructure.
CloudThat has adopted the practice to assist our clients in adopting cloud computing and becoming
more energy efficient in their computational activities. We encourage our clients to be known as
organizations that operate on a low-energy diet.
Organizations invest in on-premises data centers to prepare for spikes in resource utilization. They
frequently underutilize resources, whereas public cloud data centers always ensure optimal resource
utilization. As a result, the server utility rate is increased.
According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, data centers consume about 2% of total
energy consumption in the United States. This equates to 73 to 75 billion kilowatt-hours.
However, embracing public cloud data centers powered by renewable energy sources such as
geothermal, solar, wind power, hydropower, and other eco-friendly electricity assists organizations
in better managing energy.
Green Cloud Technology has assisted numerous organizations in developing software solutions and
applications that promote a remote work culture. The recent trend of remote work culture reduces
traffic on streets, reduces energy consumption at the workplace, increases productivity, and, most
importantly, saves energy, thereby aiding in the preservation of the ecosystem. Cloud computing
makes all of this possible.
A recent AWS report found that traditional data centers have a dirtier power mix than the average
public cloud provider. Moving to public clouds thus contributes to creating a more sustainable
environment.
As an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner, CloudThat provides a record number of free cloud-wellness
assessment programs to raise awareness among small, large, and medium-sized organizations about
the importance of the sustainability pillar in the AWS Well-Architected Review. Furthermore, they
conduct social awareness campaigns for startups and other small organizations to disseminate
knowledge about the long-term environmental, economic, and societal consequences of business
activities that needs to be addressed by promoting green cloud technology.
