Guide to Implementing Technology in the Classroom

Tip #1 – Keep it content centered

Technology in the classroom is used to support students’ learning and extend the lesson into
independent practice. Whatever the technology is being used for, it is important to make sure that
the content is the main focus of the lesson. Students should be using technology to enhance
learning.

Tip #2 – Use technology to differentiate materials

Classrooms are filled with students of various backgrounds and academic knowledge.
Technology can be used to differentiate the delivery of instructional practice to meet the needs of
each student. This could include having texts read aloud, visual cues and support, or step-by-step
instructional videos.

Tip #3 – Student devices

Many schools in the United States have adopted a 1:1 Classroom Devices program where each
student is assigned a device (Chromebook, iPad, etc.) for classroom use. Students are able to
have daily access to online materials at school and at home. This can help students stay engaged
in technology-based instruction and practice and allows them to extent their learning to their
home.

Tip #4 – Take “screen breaks”

With the excitement and ease of technology, it can be easy to slip and solely rely on technology
for instruction in the classroom. However, take breaks from using technology. This will keep the
use of technology feeling fresh, fun, and not overdone.

Tip #5 – Keep the teacher as the main deliverer of instruction

Just like keeping the classroom content-centered, it is important that the teacher remains the
main facilitator and deliverer of instruction. Remember, technology is used as a support tool and
is not meant to act as the teacher/instructor. By keeping the teacher as the main content deliverer,
the students are able to learn the material and then apply what they have learned using
technology.
