Part I: Sensors

Description: This task will cultivate your knowledge of kinds of sensors and various uses,
functions and of sensors. Do the following:

1. Choose a sensor you want to study carefully.

2. Make a research on the selected sensor.
3. Prepare a written report of the following:
a. Kind of sensor
b. Applications, uses, and functions.
c. Describe how the sensor works.
d. Benefits of chosen sensor’s applications.
e. Applications of the selected sensor can be integrated with a transducer or
other sensor with pictorial and schematic diagram

A. Ultrasonic Sensor

- Ultrasonic Sensor is a device that measures the distance by using ultrasonic sound
waves and converts it into electrical signals.

B. Applications, uses, and functions

- Ultrasonic sensors are used for proximity sensors. They are also used to monitor
liquids. Ultrasonic sensors are not permitted to sense smoke and airborne particles.

C. Describe how the sensor works

- They work by sending out sound waves that are above average of our hearing. The
ultrasonic sensor’s transducer acts like a microphone that receives and sends the
ultrasonic sound. Calculating the time it travels and the speed of sound, the distance
can be calculated.
D. Benefits of chosen sensor’s applications
- Most often, proximity sensors are combined with ultrasonic sensors. They are also
common in monitoring a liquid's level. Ultrasonic sensors are a highly reliable method
of detecting objects and measuring distance and fill level. These versatile,
non-contact sensors are compatible with virtually any industrial application and
proven to be an excellent alternative to optical or capacitive sensors.

E. Applications of the selected sensor can be integrated with a transducer or

other sensor with pictorial and schematic diagram
- The piezoelectric buzzer transducer can be integrated with the ultrasonic sensor. Both
can work together and applied to systems that has something to do with security and
monitoring.

Part II: Transducers

Description: This task will cultivate your knowledge of kinds of sensors and various
applications of sensors. Do the following:

1. Choose a transducer you want to study carefully.

2. Make a research on the selected transducer.
3. Prepare a written report of the following:
a. Kind of transducer
b. Applications, uses, and functions.
c. Describe how the transducer works.
d. Benefits of chosen transducers’ applications.
e. Applications of the selected transducer can be integrated with a
sensor or other transducer.

A. Piezo Transducers

- Piezo Transducers are a type of electroacoustic transducer that convert the electrical
charges produced by some forms of solid materials into energy.

B. Applications, uses, and functions

1. Applications - It converts the temperature of desired devices into mechanical work

or an electrical signal. It can be employed in the antenna for converting the
electromagnetic waves into an electrical signal.
2. Uses - They are used in seismographs to measure vibrations in rockets.
3. Functions - It uses a sensor capable of converting the pressure acting on it into
electrical signals. These electrical signals are then relayed to controllers or PLCs
where they are then processed and recorded.

C. Describe how the transducer works?

- A transducer is an electronic device that converts energy from one form to another.
For instance, it converts the physical quantity to voltage or electric current. In general
words, it changes the quantities to the form, which is measurable in the form of
electrical signals.

D. Benefits of chosen transducers’ applications

- The applications of transducers allow opportunities for implementing renewable
energy through power harvesting and self-sustained smart sensing in buildings.

E. Applications of the selected transducer can be integrated with a sensor or

other transducer
- The piezo transducer can be integrated with the piezo sensor. One measures
changes in pressure, acceleration, temperature, and strain, while the other converts it
into an electric signal

Questions

1. What are the differences between sensor and transducer? Explain briefly.
- A sensor detects things while a transducer converts something into another form.
Usually, sensors and transducers are paired so that the sensor detects things and
then the transducer will convert said thing into another form, usually into an electric
signal.
