Outdoor Play Assignment – 20% Applied Curriculum Fall 2020

CLO 2 Examine the role of the adult in planning and creating environments that support
children’s development in physical/active play

CLO 4 Develop and explore materials and environments that encourage creativity,
problem solving and investigation through play

CLO 5 Create and evaluate environments that reflect a bias free and accessible approach
to enhance young children's development in various curriculum areas

CLO 7 Develop skills to broaden creativity and resourcefulness when planning


curriculum.

CLO 8 Create curriculum materials and plan experiences that promote children's learning
through play.

Part 1: Practice Recommended Games

 Choose and learn to lead 3 games from the Active Games Booklet and/or the Loose
Parts course materials; 1 from each Age Group, including 1) Infant/Toddler 2) Preschool
3) Kindergarten/School-age)
 Learn and practice these games; source/prepare the required materials.
 Learn and practice the “Strategies to support early learning practitioners in facilitating
outdoor play” (Box 3, Chapter 4, p. 152)
 Consider the Safety precautions (Chapter 4, pp. 156-158); Risk Assessment document
(Table 3, p. 138).
 Aim to practice multiple times and document your efforts within a Portfolio (i.e.,
Dates/Times; photographs; Field Notes)
o Describe the Safety Precautions you would employ (cite textbook)
o Describe the Strategies you would attempt (cite textbook)
o Describe your experiences & feelings.
o Describe the responses of your participants, if possible (i.e., children, family,
friends).
o Note your ongoing questions/wonderings.
o How prepared do you feel to lead such games in a placement setting?
 Be prepared to discuss the science and mathematical concepts involved in the Outdoor
Play.
 Be prepared to discuss the social skills involved in the Outdoor Play.

Part 2: Pedagogical Commitments and Questions about Outdoor Play


 As a beginning Educator, describe your understanding of the importance of outdoor play
to children (cite Chapter 4, pp. 127-133), and where you stand (i.e., your Pedagogical
Commitment) to planning, provisioning & participating in Outdoor Play. Formulate your
ongoing ‘Questions for Reflection’ about outdoor play which address some of the
tensions/uncertainties about Outdoor Play (aim for 3-5 questions; See How Does
Learning Happen? [2014] for examples of such questions).
