GROUP DISCUSSION SITUATIONS

Instructions

1. One group consists of three (3) to four (4) participants.


2. Below are the situations that you can use for practice and assessment.
3. Choose one (1) situation only for each group.
4. Each participant is given one (1) point (for example, Situation 1- candidate A takes the
point of Parents).
5. Start with Task A and then Task B.
6. You are expected to give an in-depth discussion by giving your opinion, agree or disagree
with each other’s view. (Read-up/ do some research on the topic)

Situation 1
In today's modern society, a lot of tradition has been forgotten. There are some of the ways in
which we can keep our tradition alive.

Discuss which of the following is the most important way of keeping tradition alive:

Candidate A: Through playing traditional sports and games


Candidate B: Through performing traditional songs and dances
Candidate C: Through promoting traditional arts and craft
Candidate D: Through practising traditional values and customs

Task A: Individual Presentation

Given the situation, you now have:


1. 1 minutes to prepare your responses
2. 1 minutes to present

Task B: Group Discussion

You are given:


1. 2 minutes to prepare your points to either support or oppose the other candidates’ views
2. Decide on which of the 4 points you think is the best (Note: it is perfectly fine to agree with
another candidate’s points just as long as you explain “why” and “how it is the best point”)
3. The entire group is given 10 minutes for this discussion
Situation 2
Lifespan and health conditions have improved tremendously. As a result, many people who
retire in their fifties are still fit and alert.

Discuss which of the following will most benefit retired people:

Candidate A: To be re-employed
Candidate B: To start a small business
Candidate C: To do social work
Candidate D: To learn something new

Task A: Individual Presentation

Given the situation, you now have:


1. 1 minutes to prepare your responses
2. 1 minutes to present

Task B: Group Discussion

You are given:


1. 2 minutes to prepare your points to either support or oppose the other candidates’ views

For Malaysia/a country to be a successful nation in the era of Information Technology and
globalisation, one must acquire certain skills to be able to compete with other countries.

Discuss which of the following ways would best prepare us to compete with other countries:

Candidate A: Be proficient in the English language


Candidate B: Acquire critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Candidate C: Obtain knowledge in Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Candidate D: Be hard-working and good team players
