CREATING A BOOTABLE DEVICE

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ____________________

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Create portable bootable devices in accordance with software manufacturer instruction.

TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-If-j-29

Subtasks:
1. Explain the meaning of a bootable device and its process.
2. Appreciate the importance of a bootable device.
3. Create a bootable device.

Time Allotment: 8 hours

II. KEY CONCEPTS

Definition of terms:
USB – Universal Serial Bus
OS – Operating System
GB – Gigabyte
FAT – File Allocation Table
NTFS – New Technology File System

A boot/bootable device is any piece of hardware containing the files required for a computer to
start. For example, a hard drive, floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive, DVD drive, and USB flash drive
are all considered bootable devices. However, unless the necessary boot files are stored on the
drive, diskette, or disc, the computer cannot boot from that device.

When installing a new operating system, troubleshooting the computer, booting from another drive
(e.g., USB flash drive, CD-ROM drive) or running a Live OS, a bootable disc or setup disc is
inserted. If the boot sequence is set up correctly, the contents of the bootable disc are loaded.

USB boot is the process of using a USB storage device to boot or start a computer's operating
system rather than the standard/native hard disk or the CD drive.

To boot (as a verb; also "to boot up") a computer is to load an operating system into

the computer's main memory.

Materials to be prepared in creating a bootable USB:

 USB Flash Drive (8GB capacity or above)

 Clean / virus-free computer unit
 ISO image file of your desired operating system (Note: in the NC 2 assessment proper,
Windows Server Operating System is the required OS loaded in the bootable device)
 WinSetupFromUSB software (Free download in their website
www.winsetupfromusb.com/downloads)

III. GUIDED PRACTICE

Directions: Perform the procedure in creating a bootable USB using the WinSetupFromUSB
software. Follow the steps provided and accomplish the checklist. Copy the checklist on a separate
sheet of paper.

Procedure in creating a bootable USB using WinSetupFromUSB software

1. Locate the downloaded WinSetupFromUSB 7zip file (usually located in the Downloads folder).
Run (double-click) the file to extract

2. Click the “…” button to browse the location where you want the files to be extracted.

3. After extraction, you may navigate the files and you will see something like this:

4. Right-click WinSetupFromUSB_1-7.exe then select “Run as Administrator” if the type of your

OS is 32-bit otherwise, run WinSetupFromUSB_1-7_x64.exe for 64-bit computer system.

To check your OS type: right-click My Computer, choose properties, x86 indicates a 32-bit OS
while x64 is 64-bit.

5. The interface of WinSetupFromUSB

6. Insert a USB flash drive and wait until WinSetupFromUSB detects it. Proceed to the next step
once detected.

7. Check the option “Autoformat it with FBinst”

8. Choose a file system according to the OS that you will load into the USB;

NTFS is recommended for flashdrives with 16GB and above memory capacity and this file
system suits Windows OS while FAT32 is for below 16GB memory capacity flashdrives, in
addition, this file system is well-suited for Linux OS distributions.

9. Click the checkbox on what OS you would want to load into the USB.

10. Browse the ISO file of the OS.

11. Click the “GO” button to start creating your bootable USB.

It will then warn that the process will delete all the files in the USB flash drive so better make sure
to back-up all the important files before proceeding.
Wait until a pop-up notification “Job Done” will appear and you’re all done!
