Answer all questions.

1. The function f is defined by

f : x → ln (3x – 2) + 3, x ∈ ℝ, x > 3
(a) Find 𝑓 −1 and state its domain and range. [3]
(b) Find the exact value of the x-coordinate of the point where the curve y = f(x)
cuts the x-axis and the exact value of the y-coordinate of the point where the curve
y = 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) cuts the y-axis. [1]

2. If k > 0 and n is a positive integer, the series expansion of (1 + kx)n in ascending powers of x

to the term in x3 is 1 + 2 𝑥 + Ax2 + Ax3 + … where A is a non-zero constant.
(a) Show that nk = 2k + 3. [4]
(b) Hence, find the values of n and k. [4]

3. A system of linear equations is given by


2x – 3y + 4z = 1
3x – y = 2
x + 2y + pz = 1
where p is a real constant
. (a) Reduce the augmented matrix of the system of linear equations to row-echelon
form. [4]
(b) State the value of p such that the system has infinitely many solutions. For this value
of p, solve the system of linear equations. [4]

4. The following complex number relationships are given


w = 4 − 4√3𝑖 , z3 = w
(a) Express w in the form 𝑟(cos 𝜃 + 𝑖 sin 𝜃), 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑟 > 0 𝑎𝑛𝑑 − 𝜋 < 𝜃 < 𝜋. [2]
(b) Hence, find the roots of z, giving the answers in the form x + yi, where x and y are
real values. [3]
(c) Plot the roots as points in an Argand diagram. [2]

5. Given P(p2 , 2p) and Q(q2 , 2q) are two points on the curve y2 = 4x. The chord PQ intersects
the x-axis at the point T(4, 0).
(a) Show that pq = – 4 [2]
(b) M is the midpoint of the chord PQ. Show that the locus of M is a parabola. [3]
(c) Hence, sketch the locus of M, stating its vertex, focus and directrix. [2]

6. The points R and S have position vectors 2i + j + k and i – 2j + 2k respectively. The line l
has vector equation r = i + 2j – 3k + (i – 3j – 2k).
(a) Find a vector equation for the vector ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑅𝑆. [2]
(b) Find the acute angle between the direction RS and l, giving your answer correct to 2
decimal places in degree. [3]
(c) Find the exact value of the area of triangle ORS. [3]

You may answer all the questions but, only the first answer will be marked.

7. The 3 × 3 matrices A, B and C, where m and n are scalar constants, are given below.

(a) Show that A is a non-singular matrix for all values of m. [4]

(b) Find det A if m = 2. Deduce | 1 1 −4|. [3]

(c) Find BC. Deduce the inverse of B in terms of n. State the condition for its
existence. [4]
(d) By using the result obtained from (c) and let n = 5, solve the simultaneous equations
x + 2y – z = 0
4x + 5y – 2z = 46

 Two lines l1 and l2 have equations r1 = 3i + 2j + 5k + s(4i – j + 3k) and
r2 = i – j – 2k + t(– i + 2j + 2k) respectively.
(a) Show that l1 and l2 are perpendicular. [2]
(b) Show that l1 and l2 intersect and state the position vector of the point of intersection.
[5]
(c) Find the cartesian equation of plane,  that passes through – i + 3j + 2k and is
parallel to the lines l1 and l2. [5]
(d) Find the perpendicular distance from the origin to the plane . [3]
