When Aerobic respiration occurs, all the bonds in the glucose molecule are broken, and the glucose

is said to be
completely oxidized or completely broken down. This means that a large number of ATP molecules are made.

However, in Anaerobic respiration, since there is no oxygen present, the glucose molecule is not completely broken
down or oxidized at all. Thus much of the energy contained within the bonds that comprise the glucose molecule is not
released and thus a relatively small number of ATP molecules are synthesized.
