Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)—to Partner

1. What is Work Immersion?

Work Immersion refers to the part of the Senior High School Curriculum consisting of
360 hours of hands-on experience or work simulation which the Grade 12 students will
undergo to expose them to the actual workplace setting and to enrich the competencies
provided by the school under the supervision of the School Head and the designated
personnel of the Partner. The 360 hours may be scheduled for no more than 8
cumulative or consecutive hours per day. All Technical-Vocational Institutions offering
Senior High School shall be governed by this guideline on this 360-hour work
immersion. All applicable safety guidelines of TESDA and DOLE relevant to basic
education shall also apply. (DepEd Order No. 40, s. 2015)

2. How many students are we required to host?

It depends on what is agreed upon between the partner and school based on your
preference. The Tech-Voc schools can provide as many students as are enrolled in the
tracks relevant to your workforce areas of need.

3. How much would it cost?

There is no financial contribution expected from you as the Partner. The support
requested is to have one of your staff that will provide supervision and coaching to the
students during their time in your company.

4. What About the Health and Safety of the students while in the workplace?
As embedded in DOLE Labor Advisory No.8, s. 2016 and DOLE DO No. 149, s.
2016 the partners will ensure the health and safety of the students while they are on
the partners’ premises under the Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
However, the partners will be indemnified against any injury or untoward incidents to
concerned students. In case of emergency, the work immersion coordinator and the
teachers will be the emergency contact persons.
All students enrolled in the work immersion must be insured by an insurance agency as
agreed by the school and the parents of the students.

5. Who will pay for insurance?

The students will be covered by a Personal-Paid Insurance Policy sponsored by the
school for injury which has to be agreed first in the school level before starting the
actual work immersion.
Moreover, since students are prepared for work immersion before going to the
workplace, the work immersion coordinator and teachers have to ensure that students
must be very cautious when they are in the workplace.
6. Are the SHS students too young to be in the workplace?
There has long been a common notion that companies are not allowed to engage youth
below 18 years old; however Article 139 of the Philippine Labor Code actually sets
the minimum employable age at 15 years old. In fact, there is also a provision in the
Labor Code (Art. 57 to 61) allowing for the employment of ‘apprentices’ in highly
technical trades as long as he or she is at least 14 years old.

7. Are we allowed to host only students that are specializing in our trade?
Apart from the technical specializations in specific industries (e.g. manufacturing,
welding, electrical repair, commercial cooking), some Tech-Voc schools also have
courses in office administration, information technology, computer hardware servicing
—which could be relevant for a wide variety of industries.

8. Who decides what the students will do during the work immersion duration in the
workplace?
Before the commencement of the work immersion placement of the students, the
partner and school will agree on the list of tasks that the students will complete based
on the skill sets of the students and the areas of work that can contribute to the partner.
Further, these will be discussed with the students so everyone is clear on the
expectations of what will be completed in the work immersion duration.
The students will have a work immersion logbook wherein he/she will log the tasks
completed for the day as well as new things learned. It is suggested that the staff
serving as the students’ supervisor will also sign the students’ logbook at the end of the
day, as well as fill in a one-page evaluation of the student at the end of the placement.
It is ensured that the logbook is not the responsibility of the host employer but the
responsibility of the student.

9. What are the advantages of hosting students in the Work Immersion Program?
The benefit of the program to partners is that they will have a skilled student with no
cost to the partner. This can also contribute to the partner’s efforts in improving
workforce development for your industry by providing you a steady source of skilled,
NCI/NCII-accredited and qualified workers in the years to come.
Additionally, having this formal partnership with the school that has a new batch of
graduates each year could possibly reduce your recruitment costs, as well as training
costs since the students already have the required skill sets from the Tech-Voc course
relevant to your business.
More so, the government provides Tax Incentive for those who support the K-12
Program, this incentive conforms with the tax incentive provision of Republic Act No.
8525 otherwise known as the Adopt-a-School Act of 1998 and of the Revenue
Regulation no. 10-2003.
A guideline is provided for accepting the availment of tax incentives in Dep.Ed. Order
No.24, 2016 wherein the partners’ support is in the different assistance form such as:
a.) Funding Assistance/ Contribution or Donation b.) Use of Facilities c.) Service and
Professional Expertise d.) Equipment, Machine, and Other Materials; and e.)Land/ Real
Estate Property.

10. Who are involved in the Work Immersion Program?

In close collaboration of the Work Immersion Coordinator and the Partners, the Work
Immersion Program is realized. Grade 12 Students who will be the recipient of the said
program together with the parent/guardian are required to actively participate and
support all for the success of the Work Immersion Program.
The overall goal of the Work Immersion Program is to build a best practice model for
training youth on work readiness and employability skills using locally and
contextualized adapted practices. Hence, it aims to help determine the most effective
and relevant way to roll-out appropriate and sufficient training to strengthen
employability skills of youth as we take positive step in the full-implementation of the K-
12 Program of the Department of Education.
