DEEP DIVE

Focus: Community Organizing – Participatory Action Research (COPAR) You have

learned about the phases of COPAR a while ago. This time, you need to provide the
salient activities for each phase and what should the nurses do and remember in each
of the phases. You may write in a separate paper if the boxes provided are too limited
for you. Best of luck!

According to Sr. Carmen Jimenez, the phases of COPAR are as follows (7):

DESTINATION CHECK

You are nearly done with your module for COPAR! Before we end, let us check what you
have learned so far and touch the topics which have been discussed earlier but may not
have been covered in the questions asked so far.

It has been mentioned that the most essential element in COPAR is community
participation. In this regard, you, as the community health nurse, must ensure that the
community will elect a leader to whom they will not need have a difficulty reaching out to
discuss community problems. You will also ensure that the place where the community
members will gather and meet to discuss health-related problems that concerns the
community is agreeable to all of the residents of that community. To this end, answer the
following question(s):

What are the considerations that need to be kept in mind when selecting a leader
within the community and the place of gathering to discuss community problems
in the community? Discuss.

Sharing with you the tagline I have had in choosing a leader; “choose a leader who has
eyes for the good of his people, ears to hear their cry, and hands to help the destitute and
the needy, lastly, choose a leader who has a heart for genuine public service.”

There are several ways to gather people in the community; hence, community
engagement strategies. In our barangay, officials often conduct seminars and roll out
public invitations. This invitation, along with the purpose of the said gathering will catch
people's attention. Seminars and other community engagements are hosted in our local
community's/barangay gymnasium, function hall, and even barangay halls. All initiatives to
improve the community response's accountability, inclusivity, and enablement is included
in public engagement to increase community participation and the overall effectiveness
of the interventions

The same goes for the criteria for selecting a potential leader. They must have relatively
good communication skills, be responsive, be willing to work for change, and be respected
by members of the community. As part of their effective leadership and credentials to
work, potential leaders should ensure that all affected communities, regardless of sex,
age, or social standing, have access to the knowledge and information necessary to make
informed decisions, that their voices are heard by responding agencies, and that
community organizations are responsible for responding to those issues or concerns.
