Abstract

The filter cloth of Filter drum 40-2345 was changed on 9-March-2022 as a planned activity. The
job started on the night of 9-Mar-22 and was handed to operations in the late evening of the
same day. The main intent of this report is to discuss the problem statement and the job
procedure followed in this job.

Filter Drum 2345 drum shell is divided into 10 segments by the ring strips. These strips are
provided with the grooves to fix the filter cloth evenly tight and without any depressions. There
are two strips i.e., Division Strip and Ring Strip. Division strips are the ones aligned parallel to
the filter drum’s shaft whereas the ring strips are the ones at the right and left at the drum end.

Problem statement

The Filter Cloth of 40-2345 was damaged and worn out. There were several blockages on the
filter cloth due to the dry scaling of the solution. This was causing a problem as a wetter cake of
CN was being extracted thus causing production loss.

Action Taken

A complete set of filter cloths was replaced on 09/2/2022.

Filter Cloth Specification

Filter cloth comprises of two sets namely Saran supporting cloth and Wire mesh.

Procedure
Filter drum 40-2345 is divided into 10 segments by division strip. The first step requires cutting
down of Wire mesh and the saran cloth according to the length of segment i.e., 9ft.

After cutting down 9 feet of saran cloth and wire mesh. Firstly, the supporting saran cloth is placed on
segment followed by wire mesh. Each 9ft of both Saran cloth and wire mesh covers two cells/segment
on the filter drum 40-2345. Both cloths are placed smoothly and evenly so that there are no bumps or
air sacks in the cloth.

After placing both cloth and wire mesh Teflon pump packing is used fix the filter cloth in the
division strip. Teflon packing is beat in groves carefully by a hardwood key in and a wooden
hammer. Hanging and extra cloth is cut down using cloth cutter.

After the cloth has been replaced on all segments of the drum followed by Teflon packing, a
stainless wire is wound up tightly all over the cloth which is bolted at the end.
