Examples & Explanations

We use this (singular) and these (plural) to refer to something that is here / near.
This book is great (book is near me).
These books are great (books are near me).

We use that (singular) and those (plural) to refer to something that is there / far

That book on the table is great (book is not near me).

Those books on the table (books are not near me).

Look out!

Many people forget the ‘s’ for plural (more than one) nouns.

They say:

These book. (These books)

Those dog. (Those dogs)

It is confusing for the other person.

More than one thing there/far = those

Did you know?

Tom: What are doing today?

Sara: This and that.

What does this and that mean?

Sara is doing various things, but she does not want to explain.
We don’t say:
Tom: What are you doing today?
Sara: These and those. (NO!)
