Purpose of measurement system:
To present an observer with a numerical value corresponding to the variable being measured

• Process: system which generate • Common measured variable :

information such as chemical reactor, car, acceleration, humidity, pressure, pH,
human heart, weather system velocity, etc

• The input to the measurement system is the true value of the • Observer: person who need information
variable; the system output is the measured value of the variable. such from the process such as plant
In reality, the measured value does not equal the true value. operator, car driver, nurse, sailor
Accuracy of the System

• Can be defined as the closeness of the measured value to the true value.
• A perfectly accurate system is a theoretical ideal.
• The accuracy of a real system is quantified using measurement system error E, where:

• Error is the main performance indicator for a measurement system.

• Ex: Measured value of the flow rate of gas in a pipe is 11.0 𝑚 /ℎ and the true value is
11.2 𝑚 /ℎ , then the error E = −0.2 𝑚 /ℎ .
Structure of measurement system
Application of measurement system in manufacturing industry

1. Monitoring of processes and operations 2. Control of Process and operations 3. Experimental engineering analysis

• Measuring devices are being used to • Automatic feedback control systems. • All the engineering design, development
keep track of some quantity E.g.: • Sensors are used as feedback systems. and research lies on laboratory testing
thermometers, barometers, radars, etc. • Every feedback control system have
• To indicate the environment condition, at least one measuring device as a vital
and the reading does not serve any component
control functions in the ordinary sense.
