Test-2 Scheme

Q1 A liquid level system shown in Figure Q1.

Figure Q1

(a) Outline briefly the operational of the fluid system from the input to the output.
(10 marks)

(b) Determine the mathematical model of the system.

(35 marks)

(c) Referring to the results from Q1(b), identify in detail the gauge pressure of the tank
system.
(5 marks)

Solution:

(a) The tank system has a combinational inputs of a constant flow rate (mass) 𝑞 and a
regulated input from a pump 𝑃 through a valve with resistance 𝑅 those filling the tank
to a certain level of ℎ.
The output is going through a valve with resistance 𝑅 and a pump 𝑃 .

(b)
Q2 A thermal system involving two compartments is shown in Figure Q2.

Figure Q2

(a) Determine the mathematical model of the thermal system.

(30 marks)

(b) By assuming 𝑇 = 0 (no heat loss to outside of the compartments), determine the
Transfer Function of the system.
(10 marks)

(c) Present your comments to the characteristics of the system.
