Statement of the Problem

The problem being addressed in this research is the challenges faced by student bikers in Manila, a car-
centric city, and how these challenges impact their preference for cycling. Despite the potential benefits
of cycling, such as improved health, reduced traffic congestion, and lower carbon emissions, cycling
remains an unpopular mode of transportation in Manila. The study seeks to explore the experiences of
student bikers in Manila, the challenges they encounter while cycling, and how these challenges affect
their preference for cycling. The research aims to shed light on the barriers that prevent students from
cycling and provide insights that can help policymakers and urban planners promote cycling as a viable
mode of transportation in Manila.

A clear understanding of the core problem can be achieved by addressing the following questions:

1. What are the factors that motivate student bikers to prefer cycling over other modes of
transportation in Manila?
2. What are the challenges that student bikers face when cycling in car-centric Manila and how do
these challenges affect their cycling behaviors and experiences?
3. How do social and cultural norms in Manila shape the experiences of student bikers, and how do
these norms influence their decision to cycle or use other modes of transportation?
