Journalistic Writing

Journalistic writing is a form of non-fiction writing used to report news and factual events.
It can be utilised in newspaper articles, television reports, radio scripts and on news websites.
Without journalism, the world would be ignorant. Journalism is important because it gives
current and relevant information and news to the public. Benjamin Franklin said, “Whoever
would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by judging the freeness of speech.”

News Report

News reports are found in newspapers and their purpose is to inform readers of what is
happening in the world around them. News reports have a certain structure that you need to
follow. This structure is sometimes called the Inverted Pyramid. News Reports begin with a
catchy headline. The lead paragraph informs the reader of the most important aspects of the
story as soon as possible. The lead paragraph is often the only part of the story that people
read. Use the 5Ws rule: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, Why and HOW. Though it may be
interesting or even entertaining, the foremost value of news is as a utility to empower the
informed.

Opinion Article

An opinion piece is an article, usually published in a newspaper or magazine, that mainly

reflects the author's opinion about a subject. Opinion pieces are featured in many periodicals. It
tackles recent events and issues, and attempts to formulate viewpoints based on an objective
analysis of happenings and conflicting/contrary opinions.Opinion journalism is journalism that
makes no claim of objectivity. Although distinguished from advocacy journalism in several ways,
both forms feature a subjective viewpoint, usually with some social or political purpose.
Common examples include newspaper columns, editorials, op-eds, editorial cartoons, and
punditry.

Feature Article

A feature article is an article written to give more depth to topical events, people or
issues. Written by an expert or a journalist, these texts provide background information on a
newsworthy topic as well as the writer's personal slant or experience. Features articles use a
mix of first, second or third person as appropriate. First person (I, me, my, we, us, our) can be
used to establish a relationship with the reader, a relationship with the person who has died and
to possibly explain anecdotes. Third person is used where the speaker is providing a personal
history of the deceased or an outline of their life.

Sport News Article

Sports writing is a form of journalism or creative nonfiction in which a sporting event,
individual athlete, or sports-related issue serves as the dominant subject. A journalist who
reports on sports is a sportswriter. Sports writing plays a huge role in stirring up expectations
and giving fans the information they crave about the people behind their favorite sport. But in
order to write a good sports article, remember to focus on what an athlete does. Because sports
revolve around the drama of competition, spotlighting a single person gives your story a human
side that your readers can relate to.
