1. How do you describe the Indigenous Arts in the Philippines?

The indigenous arts of the Philippines show how rich and unique our culture is, since long ago art has
been a huge part of our culture up until in our present time. It is one of the most important things that
can never be lost from the Filipinos no matter what the times might give to us. The Philippines
considering our rich culture, we have our own share of art that has been discovered and are practiced by
our artistic people that we also apply in our day to day living. Indigenous people made such
masterpieces using raw resources and materials given by nature such as artwork from made through
extracting from trees, fruits, and vegetables. Some evidences of our indigenous art are found in caves,
trees and woods in a form of carving or drawing.

2. What makes Filipino arts distinct from other arts in the world?

Filipinos are known to have it’s own rich culture and that is also reflected in our own artworks made
from our fellow people, the artworks of the Philippines reflects the influences of our artistic culture, this
includes the indigenous forms of arts and due to these it honed our country’s artworks. We differ from
other cultures because we give importance to our own culture by making it and expressing it into
artworks, we have a rich and diverse culture we incorporate these aspects into creating beautiful art
that describes the essence of being a Filipino which can only be represented by the Philippines.

3. What is GAMABA Awards?

The GAMABA Awards stands for Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or also called as The National Living
Treasures Award. It is an award given to a talented person or a group of people who had created
artworks that are worthy tp be recognized by the Philippines government and serves as their
contribution to the nation’s cultural heritage and to give honor for their artistry for making such
artworks that represents our culture.

4. What is the purpose of GAMABA Awards?

It is to give honor and recognize the traditional artists that had majorly contributed to our country
through making art that symbolizes our culture, it is also a way for the government to give back to that
artist for their efforts and to also encourage young aspiring artist to strive hard and represent our
country.

5. What is the difference between National Artist and GAMABA?

Gamaba Awardee is only given to those traditional artists. While National Artist Awards are given to
artists who create a significant impact on others. Many artists are nominated as National Artist. While
GAMABA awardee are those who stick to traditional art. They are fewer than National Artists. Our own
artists are one of the frontrunners that can represent our country and let us be known to the world.

6. What do you think is the main problem of the indigenous materials here in the Philippines?

Indigenous people in our generation today struggle with passing their knowledge and skills to the young
generation. Due to the rapid growth of our developing world where everyone is using modern-day
technology and other advancements indigenous people struggle to convince the young generation to be
their next line of people who will make art.
7. What is the significant contribution of the pre-colonial art forms to the contemporary art forms in
our country?
