Professor Suranjan Das

Vice-Chancellor
Jadavpur University
Dear Sir,
Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) would like to draw your attention to
the following urgent matters seeking immediate action from the University administration.

1. It has been noticed that a section of students is using loudspeakers within the campus during
class hours, thereby creating disturbances for academic activities including classroom
teaching and examinations. During the last few weeks academic activities of the departments
close to Subarna Jayanti Bhavan and OAT have been particularly hampered due to the use of
loudspeakers in high volume. The residents of the campus, including faculty members, staff
and students have also complained about noise pollution due to the use of loudspeakers in
very high volume.
2. It has been observed that while carrying out cultural activities by the students within the
campus, such as ‘Sanskriti’, stalls are being set up in front of the academic buildings and
busy locations of the campus. These stalls are creating hindrances to the academic activities
and also obstructing the free movement of the members of the University community. More
importantly, the movement of the physically challenged students is getting affected due to
these stalls. Campus residents, faculty members, external experts and academicians coming
to the University for academic purposes are unable to use their cars at these locations for the
crowd generated by these stalls. Even, the movement of ambulances has been affected.
Moreover, it has also been observed that the number of stalls has largely increased in recent
times and the items sold in these stalls are not at all related to academics and not appropriate
for the campus of an institute of eminence.
We hope you will seriously address the above issues with urgency and support us to continue our
academic responsibilities smoothly without any such obstacles.
With regards,
Partha Pratim Ray
General Secretary
