The Embera population has a population of 35,259 people (DANE 2,005) and they are
located in the center-west of the country, which corresponds to part of the Andean and Pacific
regions in the departments of Córdoba, Antioquia, Chocó, Caldas and Putumayo. Its economy
is basically based on the cultivation of corn, bananas, cassava, hunting and fishing.
Their language is at risk due to the multiple situations they have experienced, such as
displacement by armed groups such as paramilitaries and guerrillas, in addition to that some
state and private actors have been taking part of their land, which is why some leaders
community members were murdered as they raised their voices in protest and rejection of the
disrespect of which they have been victims, for seeking recognition of the autonomy of the
original peoples. In addition to the above, a hydroelectric project caused the flooding of their
lands causing them to lose them and in addition to that their food base was submerged under
water, and generating forced displacement, this brought as a serious consequence that their
economy, social structure, culture was modified and therefore put at risk.
Of course it is a concern for the indigenous, Colombian culture and of course UNESCO that a
population with the ancestral characteristics that it presents is at risk, and it is the duty of the
Colombian state to guarantee the restitution of their violated rights and also to protect their
areas so that they are not permeated by an armed conflict that is totally unrelated but that
nevertheless year after year causes a decrease in the populations of these cultures, as an
ancestral culture its protection must be sought and in addition to that, it must be foreseen that
the projects carried out in the region do not have secondary effects on these populations,
agreements can be made and midpoints reached where the growth of their culture is respected
and promoted, as well as being recognized with the value they have before Colombia and the
world.

As a Colombian, I am aware that the growth of urban settlements has caused a great advance
for the country, however these expansions have caused the violation and loss of land in other
communities that have inhabited our territory since ancient times, which even had the force
of surviving the ruthlessness of colonization, today these peoples, in addition to their social
leaders, have UNESCO who recognize them before the world and proudly exalt their culture,
Each of the steps that this culture has taken has been increasingly towards a small corner
because unfortunately external situations have taken away their potential for growth and
appreciation, however, they raise their voices and have the strength to put a stop to the way
with the idea of being recognized, and it is our duty and the obligation of the government to
