Chapter I
The Problem and its Background

Introduction
Face to face classes is now open in many cities and provinces in the Philippines. Due to
the pandemic face to face classes was stopped by the government to minimize the spread of
the virus. Now that face to face classes are returning to selected areas. When the first online
classes in October 2020 started it was really hard. We were not used to it, to learn we had to
adjust to all the changes made to our learning system.
Private schools were forced to close because some parents could no longer afford the
fees. The children either transferred to public schools or stopped studying. With the new
normal, students are either taught by their own parents or by attending online meetings. Face
to face classes is really a better choice. Teaching the students in person can help them
understand the lesson better. It also encourages higher level of competitiveness among
students. The social environment at a traditional school is perfect to build a child’s character
and personality.
Online learning is the new way of learning in school. Having access to different
platforms, some students are finding it easier to study online. In this study we, the researchers
want to know the effects of online class in face to face classes.

Background of the study

Learning is considered to be a normal part of our lives. It gives us knowledge, using it
lets a person achieve their dream job. With the changes over the years online learning is now
also part of our environment. Letting the students continuously learn is important. It also helps
them discover how to adapt to the changes made to their environment.
Nowadays, online learning turns to be more and more practiced. It’s an easy and
comfortable method to achieve knowledge in almost every subject from grade school, junior
high school, senior high school to college. Online learning is a great alternative to traditional
learning, especially since the government didn’t allow minors to go out.

Web based teaching and learning environments can appear acutely distinctive from one
another. Distance learning is a rapidly expanding environment which allows users the
flexibility of operating outside of the constraints of time and place (Chaney, 2010). Online
learning can be defined as “learning that takes place partially or entirely over the Internet”
(U.S. Department of Education, 2010). Online learning is appealing to a range of learners and
is becoming more commonplace in settings from elementary schools to high school and into
post-secondary education
This study will focus to the effects of online class in face to face classes and to know
which method benefits the students more.
Now, Online Education is considered as a part of the educational system for all students,
because of the pandemic many students dropped out to focus in working since they don’t have
enough money to support their educational needs. Thus, this study will let us determine the
effect of online class in face to face classes, letting the students, parents and teachers to know
and understand which study method benefits them the most.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers aim to identify the effects of Online class now that Face to Face classes
are now back to the junior high school to senior high school students, this school year during
the pandemic.

Specifically, the researchers seek to answer the following:

1. How online classes will affect the students now that face to face classes are back.

2. What will the students choose between face to face classes or online classes or blended?

3. If they did choose between the options in no. 2 why did they choose that option?

Hypothesis
The Effects of Online Classes in Face to face Classes, (1) Students won’t be having a
hard time now that face to face classes are back. (2) The students can choose which method
suits them best.

Significance of the study

In this study, it makes the researchers evaluate which study method is effective for the
students. Through this evaluation, the researchers could conclude that even if offline education
is coming back the students can still choose to learn through online.
In this study, we can conclude the pros and cons of online education and offline
education during the pandemic.
Students, they will know how it will affect them and what study method can benefit
them more.
Teachers, they will understand why the students chose online education than offline
education and vice versa.
Parents, this study will help the parents to know more about online education and offline
education and how it will affect their children.
Researchers, this study will also help future researchers to have references or ideas on
how online education will affect students now that offline education is back.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on how online class affects face to face classes in all levels of students
many schools in our country are already open. many students also want to go to school.

Definition of Terms
Online Class - is a course conducted over the internet. They are generally conducted
through a learning management system, in which students can view their course syllabus
and academic progress, as well as communicate with fellow students and their course
instructor.
Face-to-face Classes - this allows for a live interaction between students and teachers. It is
the most traditional type of learning.
Pandemic - is happening now around the world. Affecting a substantial number of
individuals
Covid-19 - is an infectious disease caused by the sars-cov-2 virus.
Internet - through the internet, people can share information and communicate from
anywhere with an internet connection.

Chapter I
Review of Related Literature and Studies

Online learning among all levels have impact in their academics, others until now still
have difficulty in this situation and do not see the students’ skills and potential they have in
everything to do because of the apps placed on the phone that can easily answer what they are
made to do. Many students like the low-income earner have difficulty of having online class
instead, they undergo Modular Distance Learning which to the students even if they don’t have
access to the internet they can still continue to learn.

A. Related Literature

FOREIGN RELATED LITERATURE

(Patersen, Balle, 2021) Online Classes or what they called “e-learning”, is now gaining
more impact especially said to be in format of “blended learning”.
They have compared face-to-face classes to Online Classes to determine which format
given has the highest learning outcome and has the highest satisfaction to the students. Face
to Face learning was considered as a traditional way of learning, generally it involves the
physical classrooms and synchronous presence of the students. While the online classes,
discuss the absence of physical classrooms that are replaced by the use of technology.

( Bernard, 2014) Conclude that the element of technology integration in blended learning
courses seems to lead to very low though significant improvement in student achievement
particularly when technology yields cognitive support.
( Gonzalez – Gomez, 2016) in summative review of their studies, they have revealed
that neither of the three learning produced either better or poorer learning outcomes for the
students. Rather it is not the format itself, but its circumstancial and context dependent is.
Thus far, “ literature on the efficacy of online cources is expansive and divided (Discoll et
al., 2012) some studies favor traditional classroom instruction, starting online learning can
lack feeback for both students and instructors. (Atchley et al., 2013).

Because of these shortcomings, students retention, satisfaction and performance can be

compromised. Like traditional teaching distance learning also has its apologists who aver
online education produces students who perform as well or better than their traditional
classroom counteroarts (Westhuis et al., 2013).

LOCAL RELATED LITERATURE

Students has resorted to remote online learning, which combines both synchronous and
asynchronous activities. For students who cannot participate in online learning there are
flexible options for completing course require, ents throughout the academic year (De La
Salle University, 2020).
ADMU has suspended synchronous online classes but continued asynchronous online
learning so that “all students can learn at their own pace” ( Villarin, 2020).
Arguably, the HEI’s pivot to modified forms of online learning attemps to concretize the
government’s stance to continue learning despite the pandemic. As the Philippine’s
Department of Education (DEPED) Secretary Leonor, Briones quipped “Educaion must
continue even in times of crisis whether it may be a calamity, disaster, emergency,
quarantine or even war” (Department of Education, 2020).
in online classes, students do not see their ability to study. like traditional learning students
are more aware of their potential and abilities in everything they will be more motivated if
they know their learning skills
