 As an institution committed to regional development, CAF is
working to help Latin America achieve the objectives of the
Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020
declared by the United Nations in May 2010.

Our commitment is to promote programs that raise awareness

of the problem and help reduce traffic fatalities and injuries
across the region.

To be successful, CAF seeks to implement a "safety system"

approach that includes training andresearch. CAF promotes
best practices and implements programs and projects that
reduce road crashes and their negative impact on society.

In Latin America
→ The leading cause of death among young people of ages 5 to 14.
SAFETY → The second leading cause of death for people of ages 15 to 44.
SYSTEM → For each traffic fatality, there are more than six people
seriously injured.
→ Road safety contributes to poverty, since many of the deceased
and injured come from the low-income population. Many of the
victims are young men, which further contributes to poverty.
→ Road safety costs are between 1% and 3% of gross domestic
product (GDP).
→ Road Safety Program
→ CAF understands that traffic crashes have major impacts that
generate serious social and economic consequences for all
countries in the region, and is a serious public health problem.
CAF initiatives aim to support national and regional governments in the following areas:
→ Design and development of road safety programs at national and local levels.
→ Promote the recognition of the motorcycle as an increasingly important mode of transportation and the
need for safe use motorcycles.
→ Promote and support the design of safety plans for motorcyclists.
→ Transportation programs that recognize vulnerable users (children, the elderly, pedestrians, cyclists
and motorcyclists).
→ Promote the use of audits and road safety inspections.
→ Training in road safety.
→ Support the creation of road safety data systems and monitoring centers.
→ Support the creation and strengthening of lead agencies responsible for road safety.
→ Design corporate road safety plans based on ISO 39001 standards, especially for companies in the
transportation sector.
